Performance of Contemporary American Music Supported
The Aaron Copland Fund for Music: Performance Program

Geographic scope: United States and internationally
Grant amount: Generally $1,500 to $20,000, with an average award of $4,000
Description: The Aaron Copland Fund for Music encourages and improves public knowledge and appreciation of contemporary American music. The Fund is currently accepting applications through the Performance Program to support performance-related activities that improve public knowledge and appreciation of contemporary concert music and contemporary jazz music by American composers. General operating support is available for performing organizations (such as orchestras, opera companies, and ensembles) and presenting organizations with a history of substantial commitment to contemporary American concert music and with plans to continue that commitment. Project support is available for organizations that do not typically engage in substantial programming of contemporary American music, but are planning an initiative of exceptional importance to such music in the forthcoming season.
Grants Available for Social Justice Litigation
The Barbara McDowell and Gerald S. Hartman Foundation
Application deadline: Letters of intent will be accepted from June 1 to June 15, 2024.
Description: The Barbara McDowell and Gerald S. Hartman Foundation makes grants to nonprofit organizations in the U.S. that undertake systemic social justice litigation. Applications must be for a specific social justice legal case, including the filing of an appeal. Areas of interest include access to benefits, children’s rights, disability rights, discrimination, domestic violence, due process, environmental justice, healthcare, homelessness, housing, Native American rights, prisoners’ rights, refugee and immigration rights, veterans’ rights, and voting rights. Ideal cases will address a social justice issue consistent with the Foundation’s issue areas of interest; significantly improve the well-being, social conditions, or civil liberties of disadvantaged persons or groups in the United States; and establish a legal precedent of significant importance to social justice. Grant funds may be used for case-related expenses including attorney time, filing fees, and expert witness expenses.
Funds Target Cybersecurity, Journalism, and Military Families and Veterans

Description: craig newmark philanthropies, created by craigslist founder Craig Newmark, focuses on organizations on the frontlines of protecting the United States’ security and democracy. Areas of interest include military families and vets, cybersecurity, trustworthy journalism, and pigeon rescue. Public charities described under Sections 501(c)(3) and 509(a)(1) or (2) of the Internal Revenue Code are eligible to apply. (Grantmaking in the area of military families and vets is done through the Bob Woodruff Foundation.) Visit the philanthropies’ website for more information and to apply online.

Grant amount: Typically $500 to $2,000
Description: Kars4Kids is a national Jewish nonprofit organization that funds educational and youth programs in communities throughout the United States. The Kars4Kids Small Grant Program provides support to nonprofit organizations throughout the U.S. with a focus on doing work on behalf of children. Areas of interest include education, youth development, and mentorship.

Grants Promote Inclusion for Kentuckians Engaging in Substance Use
Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky: Shaping a Healthy and Inclusive Future Together
Application deadline: May 24, 2024
Geographic scope: Kentucky
Grant amount: Ten to 15 grants of either $10,000 to pilot new programming or $50,000 to support ongoing work will be awarded.
Description: The Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky’s Shaping a Healthy and Inclusive Future Together (SHIFT) program aims to promote a culture of inclusion for individuals in Kentucky engaging in substance use or experiencing chemical dependence. Support will be provided to community-based organizations that directly serve Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color most impacted by overdose and the war on drugs to 1) integrate harm reduction programming into mainstream services or 2) increase inclusion of people who use substances into mainstream services. Community-based organizations with BIPOC leadership that primarily serve under-resourced communities of color and do not mandate sobriety in order for individuals to receive services are eligible to apply. (The Foundation is also currently accepting applications through the Vaccines Outreach and Events program, for projects that educate minoritized communities about adult vaccine recommendations or provide an opportunity for people to receive these immunizations, as well as the KYIR Grants program, which focuses on increasing the number of vaccination providers that utilize the Kentucky Immunization Registry.)
Support Provided in Native Communities in ND, SD, and MN
Good Relatives Collaborative
Application deadline: June 28 and September 30, 2024
Geographic scope: Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota
Grant amount: Up to $60,000
Description: The Good Relatives Collaborative provides grants to grassroots and Native-led organizations engaged in community-powered solutions serving Native communities in South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, and the Native nations that share the same geography. Grants are provided for the following stages: Exploring grants of up to $20,000 are for groups and organizations with annual budgets of $25,000 or less who are not necessarily organized as a nonprofit yet but are considering it and are doing the work in the community already. Emerging grants of up to $40,000 are for new organizations with annual operating budgets between $25,000 and $75,000 that have and manage a small number of grants but need more experience with the grant process. Growing grants of up to $50,000 are for emerging organizations with a track record of receiving grants and an annual budget of $75,000 to $200,000. Maturing grants of up to $60,000 support experienced organizations with annual operating budgets from $200,000 to $500,000 and a track record of managing foundation, state, and federal grants. Native-led, Native-serving organizations and community collaborators, organizations, and nonprofits with 501(c)(3) status or a fiscal sponsor are eligible to apply.
Social Impact Theatre Funded in the West
The Sheri and Les Biller Family Foundation: Social Impact Theatre Grant Program
Application deadline: The next round of applications will open in May 2024.
Geographic scope: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington
Description: The Sheri and Les Biller Family Foundation’s Social Impact Theatre Grant Program supports theatres in Western states that are igniting positive changes in their communities through the programming they bring to life on stage. Support is provided for social impact theatre—artistic content that promotes dialogue around relevant social issues, brings different viewpoints together on challenging subjects, and provides a lens to process contemporary society. Funded productions should deal with current social issues, be contemporary, have a cast made up of at least 75% professional actors, and include at least 15 public performances. Nonprofit theatre organizations in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington State with annual revenue of at least $1,000,000 are eligible to apply.
Grants Enhance Habitat Restoration in New England
National Fish and Wildlife Foundation: Northeast Forests and Rivers Fund
Application deadline: July 11, 2024
Geographic scope: CT, ME, MA, NH, RI, and VT, as well as parts of NY
Grant amount: Approximately $2 million is available this year.
Description: The Northeast Forests and Rivers Fund (formerly known as the New England Forests and Rivers Fund), a program of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, aims to restore and sustain healthy rivers, forests, and grasslands that provide habitat for diverse fish and wildlife populations. Projects in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont, as well as parts of New York, are eligible. Support will be provided for projects that restore the quality and connectivity of stream and riparian habitats, improve management of forest blocks to enhance age and structural diversity, and promote hayfield management that allows for successful grassland bird breeding. Nonprofit organizations, state government agencies, local governments, municipal governments, tribal governments and organizations, and educational institutions are eligible to apply.

Description: The Dangers and Opportunities of Technology: Perspectives from the Humanities program supports research that examines technology and its relationship to society through the lens of the humanities, with a focus on the dangers or opportunities presented by technology. NEH is particularly interested in projects that examine the role of technology in shaping current social and cultural issues.

Description: The Radiation Exposure Screening and Education Program supports organizations screening and educating people exposed to radiation related to the mining of uranium and U.S. testing of nuclear weapons. The objectives of the Program are to create and share public information and education programs about detecting, preventing, and treating radiogenic cancers and diseases; provide medical screenings to qualifying individuals for cancer and other radiogenic diseases; provide individuals screened with referrals and follow-up services for medical treatment; and help applicants to document claims.
