General Operating Grants Available for Native-Led Groups

Native Voices Rising

Application deadline: July 7, 2023
Grant amount: Grants average $30,000 and range between $20,000 to $40,000.
Description: Native Voices Rising (NVR), a project of Common Counsel Foundation and Native Americans in Philanthropy, provides general operating support grants intended to strengthen Native-led groups throughout the United States that have a membership base in the community, work to develop leadership, and take collective action to win progressive social change. Eligible organizations should be rooted in a Native community, led by Native people, improve Native communities through organizing and advocacy, engage large numbers of community members to take action together, and seek to improve the policies and rules that impact the community. Supported efforts may focus on a wide range of issues, including, but not limited to, environmental and climate justice, health and healing, voter and civic engagement, and youth and intergenerational engagement.

Funds Assist Free Health Clinics Nationwide

American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation: Family Medicine Cares USA

Application deadline: July 17, 2023
Grant amount: Up to $25,000 for new clinics and up to $10,000 for existing clinics
Description: Family Medicine Cares USA, a program of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Foundation, provides support to new and existing free clinics to care for the uninsured in areas of need across the United States. Grants of up to $25,000 help new free clinics open their doors by supporting the purchase of medical equipment and instruments for primary care. Applicants for a new clinic grant must have opened or will open within six months of the application deadline, have received or are in the process of receiving the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics Seal of Excellence, and have an AAFP member in a leadership role within the clinic. While priority is given to new clinic applications, if funds are available, grants up to $10,000 are provided to existing clinics that serve uninsured patients with a primary care focus.

Efforts Addressing Transportation Infrastructure Harm Supported

Smart Growth America: Community Connectors Program

Application deadline: July 15, 2023
Geographic scope: United States and U.S. territories
Grant amount: Up to $130,000
Description: The Community Connectors Grants program, an initiative of Smart Growth America in collaboration with Equitable Cities, the New Urban Mobility Alliance, and America Walks, and supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, aims to advance locally driven projects that will reconnect communities separated or harmed by transportation infrastructure and tap available federal and state funds to support them. The aim is to equip small and mid-sized communities to take advantage of USDOT’s new programs for identifying, removing, and repairing the wounds of divisive infrastructure, make a powerful case for a significantly larger effort, and equip them to make use of the wider federal and state transportation programs to advance similar projects. Fifteen teams from cities between approximately 50,000 and 500,000 in population will receive a capacity-building grant of up to $130,000 as well as technical assistance and participation in a learning exchange program. Applicant teams may consist of nonprofit community-based organizations and advocates, government agencies, and tribes.

Programs Benefiting the Japanese American Community Funded

JA Community Foundation

Application deadline: June 26, 2023 for letters of inquiry
Grant amount: $2,500 to $50,000
Description: The JA Community Foundation supports organizations throughout the United States that serve the Japanese American and greater Asian American communities. The Foundation is currently focusing funding on the Japanese American community. Support is provided for programs and projects that focus on senior health and services, history, arts and culture, and youth. Nonprofit organizations are eligible to apply; applications are also accepted through fiscal sponsors.

Support Provided for Broadband Education in Company Service Area

Spectrum Digital Education Grant

Application deadline: Applications will be accepted from June 1 to June 23, 2023.
Geographic scope: Communities located in a Charter Communications service area
Grant amount: $1 million committed (grants will range from $2,500 to $50,000 in general)
Description: The Spectrum Digital Education Grant, a program of broadband connectivity company Charter Communications, supports nonprofit organizations that educate community members on the benefits of broadband and how to use it to improve their lives. Nonprofit organizations located in Charter’s 41-state service area that offer broadband education, training, and technology can apply. Supported programs should focus on families or seniors, partner with low-income or multicultural-based urban or rural communities, and have a lasting, tangible impact by, for example, the development of a new digital site or app, expansion of the capacity of a digital learning center, or creation of a mobile computer lab.

Grants Help Reduce Poverty in South Carolina

Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina

Application deadline: The upcoming deadline for inquiry forms is August 10, 2023.
Geographic scope: South Carolina
Description: The Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina, a ministry of the Sisters of Charity Health System, aims to reduce poverty in South Carolina through action, advocacy, and leadership. The Foundation provides the following types of grants to nonprofit organizations that work to reduce poverty in South Carolina: Immediate needs grants support organizations that meet the fundamental needs of people experiencing poverty in the areas of life and health, education and skills, and access and participation. Breaking the cycle grants support organizations creating and sustaining pathways to economic mobility and self-sufficiency. Systems change grants support organizations that work to influence and guide change in structural systems that have created, sustained, or reinforced the marginalization of families and individuals experiencing poverty.

Funding Promotes Services for Coloradans in Need

A.V. Hunter Trust

Application deadline: None for letters of inquiry
Geographic scope: Colorado
Grant amount: First year grants range up to $10,000.
Description: The A.V. Hunter Trust provides support to nonprofit organizations in Colorado offering direct services to Colorado residents in need, including youth, seniors, people with disabilities, and others in need or crisis. Currently, priority is given to small organizations in rural or underserved communities; organizations with annual operating budgets in excess of $1 million are unlikely to be considered for first-time funding. (Organizations that have not been funded by the Trust in the previous calendar year must call or email the Foundation to discuss their organization prior to applying.) The A.V. Hunter Trust also provides funding to assist individuals with the purchase of hearing aids, limited dental procedures, and durable medical equipment though the Funds for One program. Applications are accepted year-round from a referring professional.

Washington Gas Charitable Giving Program

Application deadline: None
Geographic scope: Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia region
Description: The Washington Gas Charitable Giving Program provides support to nonprofit organizations for programs in the Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia region. Areas of interest include educational activities for youth in the K-12 age range, with a focus on math, science, technology, and business skills as well as arts-related programs; the environment, with a focus on programs that promote cleaner air and water and that protect and preserve the ecological system of the metropolitan region; and healthy and safe communities, with a focus on health organizations that strive to improve the health and well-being of individuals within the community. Support is provided for specific programs rather than for general funding. Requests for in-kind support, sponsorships, membership dues, and volunteerism opportunities are also considered.

Program Helps Victims of Human Trafficking in Native Communities

Department of Health and Human Services

Application deadline: June 30, 2023
Description: The Victims of Human Trafficking in Native Communities (VHT-NC) Demonstration Program’s goal is to directly fund organizations that will build, expand, and sustain organizational and community capacity to deliver services to Native American (i.e. American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and/or Pacific Islander) adults and minors who have experienced a severe form of human trafficking through the provision of direct services, assistance, and referrals. Under the VHT-NC Demonstration Program, the following activities are required: 1) provision of comprehensive, culturally and linguistically responsive case management to Native Americans who have experienced sex and labor trafficking; 2) increasing identification of Native Americans who have experienced sex and labor trafficking through outreach; and 3) public awareness activities for the local community and organizations that may encounter individuals who have experienced sex and labor trafficking.

Funds Support Digitally Enabled Learning Initiatives in Music and Arts

Library of Congress

Application deadline: June 30, 2023
Description: The Lewis-Houghton Civics and Democracy Initiative supports the design and implementation of digitally enabled educational products in which music or creative arts-focused primary sources and other online materials from the Library of Congress are central to teaching and learning. Education-focused organizations knowledgeable about teaching about or creating music and other creative arts may apply for 12-month cooperative agreements, of up to $100,000 each, to develop digitally enabled learning initiatives for secondary education based on creative arts-driven instruction, especially focused on music, history, civics, and democracy. Funded projects will support the Library’s mission to use its collections to connect with all Americans, including those representing diverse communities, beliefs, and endeavors to engage, inspire, and inform Congress and the American people with a universal and enduring source of knowledge and creativity.
