Support for Social and Economic Mobility Efforts in U.S. Cities
The Kresge Foundation: Human Services Program

The Kresge Foundation is dedicated to promoting human progress by helping to improve the lives of low-income people living in America’s cities. The Foundation’s programs seek to expand opportunity for low-income people so they can gain the tools and supports needed to lead self-determined lives and join the economic mainstream. To provide greater pathways to social and economic mobility for children and families with low incomes, the Foundation’s Human Services Program is currently inviting proposals that advance place-based opportunity ecosystems; develop supportive, aligned public policy; or build a more robust human services field in cities across the U.S. The proposal deadline is September 30, 2019. Visit the Foundation’s website to learn more about each of these funding opportunities.

Collaborations to Enhance School-Based Practices Funded
Chan Zuckerberg Initiative: Effective School Practices to Support the Whole Child

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) is using technology to help solve some of the toughest challenges facing us all. Through the Effective School Practices to Support the Whole Child request for proposals, CZI will provide support to U.S.-based teams of schools, nonprofit organizations, and researchers who want to apply the science of learning and human development to improve existing school-based practices that develop self-direction and curiosity, specifically in adolescents (ages 11-18 years old). The focus is on practices that go beyond standalone interventions and are integrated into the core structures of the school model, including teaching and learning, school culture and climate, mentoring/advisory, and/or professional learning. This funding opportunity aims to: 1) identify and improve school practices by leveraging the science of learning and human development, so that more teachers and schools have access to resources that help students build academic skills as well as competencies beyond academics; and 2) leverage various ways to integrate research and practice to accelerate the application of adolescent development knowledge to the design and practice of learning environments. Grants will range from $300,000 to $750,000. The application deadline is September 13, 2019. Visit the CZI website to download the request for applications.

Funds for Minority Groups to Engage in Civic Planning in Oregon and SW Washington
Northwest Health Foundation: Civic Health Assessment and Planning

The Northwest Health Foundation is committed to promoting the health of the people of Oregon and Southwest Washington. The Foundation’s Civic Health initiative’s goals are to 1) build the skills and infrastructure in Black people, Indigenous people, and people of color (BIPOC) communities to elect leaders and change policies at the local and state level so everyone has access to the resources and opportunities they need; 2) develop leaders and talent rooted in, and supportive of, BIPOC communities; and 3) establish a vibrant democratic culture that values and supports BIPOC. Organizations selected to participate in the Civic Health Assessment and Planning process will commit to joining groups around Oregon and Southwest Washington to explore what it means to build power within and across communities and how that power can win campaigns and policy change. Through an interactive process of engagement, participants will be asked to examine what it means to have power, what building power for people of color requires, and how people-of-color-focused voter engagement work transforms power relationships. Around 20 organizations will receive $3,750 to participate in Assessment and Planning, including attending planning meetings. Eligible applicants are 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4) nonprofit organizations or fiscally-sponsored organizations. The application deadline is October 1, 2019. Upcoming Online Education Trainings
Live Webinars

Unless otherwise noted, all Online Education Trainings are webinars,
are 90 minutes in duration, and are scheduled to begin at 2 PM Eastern Time.

Practical Grantwriting: How to Answer That Tricky Sustainability Question (NEW)
Sustainability sections of grant applications are inherently tricky: it’s important to show that your organization needs the requested funding, but also, that it is not overly-reliant on those funds (or on any specific grant or source). In this webinar, Alayna Buckner, the CEO and Founder of Elevate, will help you understand how funders think about sustainability and give you practical tips to strengthen your grant requests. By the end of the webinar, you will understand essential information to include when funders ask about sustainability; review “under-looked” strategies that your organization may already be using to promote program sustainability, and how to talk about them in grant requests; and see actual examples of compelling sustainability sections. This training is ideal for grantwriting professionals at all levels, including anyone new to fundraising and grantwriting as well as experienced professionals looking for a refresher. The webinar will be held on Wednesday, August 14, 2019.

Advanced Storytelling (NEW)
We all know money talks. The important question is: HOW does YOUR organization talk about money? In this session, Lori L. Jacobwith will dive into the topic of talking about money as a fundraising strategy. You’ll learn how to share “mission moment” stories that include your need for support, but don’t sound like “begging” for money. The secret tool that makes this an advanced storytelling session is discovering how to share action-causing stories. During this webinar, you will (1) learn what your money story is; (2) learn how to talk about money so it inspires more giving; and (3) learn the best questions to ask so you can gather story nuggets to craft action-causing stories. The webinar will benefit executive directors, and fundraising and communication staff, as well as board members. The webinar will be held on Wednesday, August 21, 2019.

The Center Cannot Hold: A Look at Political Polarization and Nonprofits

By Kevin Peters

While the last couple of years may seem like a sea change of partisan divide, they are the culmination of decades of ideological shifts. Amidst all of this division and polarization in the world around us, how should a nonprofit organization react?
