Support for Community Partnerships to Address Water Issues
National Fish and Wildlife Foundation: Five Star and Urban Waters Restoration Grant Program

The Five Star and Urban Waters Restoration Grant Program, an initiative of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, seeks to develop community capacity to sustain local natural resources for future generations by providing financial assistance to diverse local partnerships focused on improving water quality, watersheds, and the species and habitats they support. The focus is on ecological improvements, including wetland, riparian, forest, and coastal habitat restoration; wildlife conservation; community tree canopy enhancement; and water quality monitoring and stormwater management. Projects should increase access to the benefits of nature, reduce the impact of environmental hazards, and engage local communities, particularly underserved communities, in project planning, outreach, and implementation. The program requires the establishment of diverse partnerships of at least five organizations (nonprofit organizations, local and state government agencies, Indian tribes, and educational institutions). Grants for this program are available nationwide, but additional funding is available for specific geographic priorities. Matching grants will range from $20,000 to $50,000, with an average of $30,000. The application deadline is January 31, 2018. Visit the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation website to review the Request for Proposals.

Programs for Military Service Members and Veterans Funded
Bob Woodruff Foundation

The Bob Woodruff Foundation supports nonprofit organizations that offer programs for post-9/11 impacted veterans, service members, their families, and caregivers. Grants are provided in the following three core areas: Education and Employment focuses on education and employment initiatives that enrich the next chapter of service members' and veterans' lives. Rehabilitation and Recovery supports programs that heal both the physical and hidden wounds of war, with emphasis on the long-term effects of living with injury. Quality of Life gives priority to programs that offer service members a sense of purpose, a place to live, healthy family relationships, and outlets for socialization. Applications for the Spring 2018 grant cycle will be accepted from November 13, 2017, through January 10, 2018. Visit the Foundation’s website to learn more about the application process.

Grants Promote Fair Elections and Equal Political Participation
Gaia Fund: Effective Democracy

The Gaia Fund values the democratic principles that govern and guide our country's political process: fair elections, representation for all, and equal opportunity for political participation. Through the Effective Democracy program area, the Fund addresses the disproportionate influence of corporate and individual wealth in American politics. Grants are provided for initiatives that promote small donor and public financing of political campaigns, full disclosure of the sources of money in political campaigns and reasonable limits on campaign contributions and expenditures, and renewal of Constitutional values that support rather than undermine political equality and that protect the Constitutional rights of human beings rather than empowering corporations with human rights. The geographic focus of this program area is national, but the Fund occasionally considers local or state programs operating in California. The application process for the first funding cycle in 2018 will open on December 15, 2017; initial applications will be due on February 15, 2018. Visit the Fund’s website to review the guidelines for the Effective Democracy program.

Fifty selected teachers will each receive a $1,000 grant; $500 to create the project and $500 for the teacher's personal use. Of the top ten recipients, one is selected to receive the Helene Marks Award, which includes an additional $1,000 grant. Applications must be postmarked by January 8, 2018. How to Track Restricted Grants in QuickBooks
Wouldn't it be great if at any point during a grant's life cycle you could simply push a button and see exactly how much and to which categories the grant dollars have been spent? Considered the country's foremost expert in using QuickBooks for nonprofits, Gregg S. Bossen, CPA, will demonstrate how to easily and accurately track restricted grants in QuickBooks. Participants will learn how to set up a restricted grant, enter the grant budget, mark checks and bills as being paid out of the grant, point payroll to the grant, and finally create a memorized report to see how the dollars have been spent and compare the results to the grant budget. Gregg will be working in QuickBooks throughout the webinar. No power point slides here! There will also be plenty of time for questions. And one more thing: Gregg is really entertaining!
