Support for Needy Pre-K-12 School Libraries
The Laura Bush Foundation for America's Libraries
The Laura Bush Foundation for America's Libraries provides funds to the country's neediest schools so that they can extend, update, and diversify the book and print collections in their libraries with the goal of encouraging students to develop a love of reading and learning. The focus is on schools serving pre-K through 12th grade in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, all U.S. territories, and Department of Defense schools. Public, charter, private, parochial, city, state, county, and reservation schools are eligible to apply. This includes special schools, social services schools, and juvenile detention center schools that serve any combination of pre-kindergarten through high school students. These grants may be used only for books, periodicals, eBooks, reference materials, and magazine/newspaper subscriptions. The application deadline is December 31, 2021. Environmental Recovery Efforts in North America Funded
Commission for Environmental Cooperation: North American Partnership for Environmental Community Action
The Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) facilitates collaboration and public participation to foster conservation, protection, and enhancement of the North American environment. The North American Partnership for Environmental Community Action (NAPECA), an initiative of CEC, partners with local and indigenous communities, academia, and non-governmental organizations in the United States, Canada, and Mexico to promote a shared responsibility and stewardship for the environment. For the current grant cycle, NAPECA is calling for proposals from organizations to support environmental initiatives that help North American communities implement solutions and strengthen their capacities to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. The focus is on supporting an equitable, clean, and sustainable recovery in North America by helping communities, particularly the most vulnerable populations, such as some Indigenous peoples and marginalized groups, build back better and become more resilient to future environmental-related threats. The application deadline is January 21, 2022. Details about the NAPECA call for proposals and information on eligible projects are available on the CEC website.
Grants Promote Healthcare Improvements Nationwide
COPIC Medical Foundation
The COPIC Medical Foundation supports nonprofit organizations that address healthcare issues in the United States. The goal of the Foundation is to be a catalyst in improving the quality of healthcare delivery by reducing adverse outcomes and supporting innovation. The Foundation provides grants for initiatives that improve patient safety and quality of care through education and training of healthcare professionals or through systems changes and improvements, pilot programs that are designed to reduce medical errors, and the development and implementation of checklists and other tools to improve disease management and transitions in care. The focus area for the 2022 funding cycle is "Fragmentation Across Care Settings." The application deadline is January 14, 2022. Music Education and Innovation Programs Supported
Les Paul Foundation
The Les Paul Foundation inspires innovative and creative thinking by sharing the legacy of Les Paul through the support of music education, recording, innovation, and medical research related to hearing. The Foundation awards grants to nonprofit organizations for programs that encourage innovation in music production and/or performance as well as to innovative STEM and STEAM programs for students and others in challenging situations. The Foundation also provides grants for medical research related to curing tinnitus and hearing impairment issues. The upcoming application deadline is January 15, 2022. Funds for Environmental Issues Impacting the East Coast
Merck Family Fund
The Merck Family Fund is dedicated to protecting the natural environment and ensuring a healthy planet for generations to come and to strengthening the social fabric and the physical landscape of urban communities. The Fund provides grants to nonprofit organizations that address one of the following three program areas: The Reducing CO2 Emissions Through Energy Efficiency and Carbon Pricing program supports the development of political and economic drivers at the federal and state level in the Northeast and Southeast to establish or expand carbon pricing mechanisms. The Conserving Ecologically Valuable Land program provides grants for land conservation efforts in the Southeast. The Urban Farming and Youth Leadership program supports initiatives in New York City and Philadelphia as well as low-income urban areas in Massachusetts that help young people to create urban farms and local markets. The deadlines for letters of inquiry in 2022 are January 10 and July 11. Visit the Fund's website for details about the program areas and application process.
Grants Promote Children's Welfare in Minnesota
The Sheltering Arms Foundation
The Sheltering Arms Foundation provides grants to nonprofit organizations in Minnesota that benefit children and families who have the least access to resources. The Foundation supports high quality direct service programs for children, ages 0-12, in the areas of early childhood and youth development. In addition, the Foundation supports advocacy efforts that increase access to high quality, culturally appropriate early childhood care as well as out-of-school time opportunities for education and youth development. Grants generally range from $5,000 to $20,000 with an average grant of $10,000. Applying organizations must be based in Minnesota and provide services to residents of the state. The application deadline is January 21, 2022. (Prior to submission of a funding request, organizations are required to contact Foundation staff to discuss how a project fits with the Foundation's guidelines.) Friends of Hawaii Charities
Friends of Hawaii Charities provides support to nonprofit organizations and public agencies that benefit women, children, youth, the elderly, and the needy in Hawaii. Grants focus on the following areas: arts and education, healthcare and basic needs, and social services, such as family abuse programs, drug and job rehabilitation, elderly services, and programs for the terminally ill. Priority is given to direct services that make a significant difference in Hawaiian communities. Grant applications must be submitted by January 26, 2022. Healthcare Initiatives in Maryland and DC Funded
Qlarant Foundation
The Qlarant Foundation is dedicated to enhancing healthcare in Maryland and Washington, DC, through measurable outcome improvement projects. Priority areas include programs that improve access to healthcare services to the unserved and underserved, improve understanding of health issues, and demonstrate improvement through measurable outcomes of stated goals. The Foundation funds a wide range of programs, including service, demonstration, education, and clinical programs producing high impact results on health outcomes. Grants of up to $50,000 are provided. Applications will be accepted from December 1, 2021, through January 19, 2022. Information on how to apply is available on the Foundation's website.

Funding Available for Community Forests
Forest Service
The Community Forest and Open Space Conservation Program offers the opportunity for communities to acquire and conserve forests. These forests provide public access and recreational opportunities, protect vital water supplies and wildlife habitat, serve as demonstration sites for private forest landowners, and provide economic benefits from timber and non-timber products. Community forests can be owned by local governments, tribal governments, and qualified nonprofit entities. Lands acquired through the program must be actively managed in accordance with a community forest plan to provide community benefits. The application deadline is January 10, 2022.
Preservation of Humanities Collections Supported
National Endowment for the Humanities
The Preservation Assistance Grants for Smaller Institutions program helps small and mid-sized institutions—such as libraries, museums, historical societies, archival repositories, cultural organizations, town and county records offices, and colleges and universities—improve their ability to preserve and care for their significant humanities collections. These may include special collections of books and journals, archives and manuscripts, prints and photographs, moving images, sound recordings, architectural and cartographic records, decorative and fine art objects, textiles, archaeological and ethnographic artifacts, furniture, historical objects, and digital materials. The application deadline is January 13, 2022.
