Support for Programs to Help Veterans and Service Members
Bob Woodruff Foundation
The Bob Woodruff Foundation supports nonprofit organizations across the country that offer programs that help our service members, veterans, and their families and caregivers thrive. The Foundation focuses on innovative programs that produce measurable outcomes that best meet emerging and long-term needs. Priority is given to programs that 1) improve social determinants of health; 2) decrease barriers to accessing physical and mental healthcare; 3) increase accessibility to programming that fosters a healthy lifestyle; and 4) enhance opportunities for veterans to thrive after service. The 2022 application deadlines are January 7 and June 1. Visit the Foundation's website for details about the online application process.

Native American Food Systems Funded
First Nations Development Institute: Gather Food Sovereignty Grant
The First Nations Development Institute (First Nations) is dedicated to strengthening American Indian economies to support healthy Native communities. The Gather Food Sovereignty Grant program, an initiative of First Nations, will support organizations working to build a national movement that will fulfill a vision of Native communities and food systems that are self-directed, well-resourced, and supported by community policies. This funding round will provide up to seven grants of approximately $32,000 for emerging projects that focus on developing Tribal food sovereignty. Tribal governments and Native-controlled nonprofit organizations are eligible to apply. The application deadline is January 13, 2022. Grants Strengthen Adult Literacy Initiatives
ProLiteracy: Literacy Opportunity Fund
ProLiteracy works to change lives and communities through the power of literacy in the belief that a safer, stronger, and more sustainable society starts with an educated adult population. Through the Literacy Opportunity Fund, ProLiteracy provides support to nonprofit adult literacy programs across the country. General operating grants of $3,000 to $6,000 are intended to help programs effectively serve adult students. Eligible operating expenses include salaries, technology, supplies, teacher stipends, equipment, space rental, etc. Applications may also focus on a particular project or new programming effort. Requests are reviewed quarterly; application deadlines are January 3, April 1, July 1, and October 1 of each year. Online application guidelines for the Literacy Opportunity Fund are available on the ProLiteracy website.

National Forest Conservation Efforts Supported
National Forest Foundation: Matching Awards Program
The National Forest Foundation was established by Congress to support the Forest Service in its management of America's National Forests and Grasslands. The Foundation's Matching Awards Program (MAP) provides grants to nonprofit organizations, universities, and Native American tribes throughout the U.S. to engage in on-the-ground conservation and restoration projects that enhance forest health and outdoor experiences on National Forests and Grasslands. Funded projects must address one of the following focus areas: The Outdoor Experiences focus area supports projects that improve the quality, condition, and care of outdoor experiences in National Forests. The Forest Health focus area supports citizen-involved projects that maintain or restore ecosystem resiliency in National Forests. The Foundation also encourages projects that integrate the Outdoor Experiences and Forest Health focus areas. All grants require at least a one-to-one cash match through non-federal donations. In addition, MAP requires projects to show a strong commitment to civic engagement and community involvement through the direct involvement of the public. The Round 1 proposal deadline for 2022 is January 12; the Round 2 deadline is June 22. Program Aims to Enhance the Quality of Life in Kentucky
Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels Good Works Program
The Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels Good Works Program's primary objective is to support needy Kentucky charities and worthy organizations that stand ready to help all Kentuckians in having a boundless future. Grants are made possible through annual donations from individual Kentucky Colonels located in the Commonwealth, across the nation, and from around the world. The Program's areas of grantmaking interest include community enhancement, historic preservation, education, life skills, homelessness, health and rehabilitation, services for veterans and military members, youth services, and services for low-income populations and people in crisis. The Program's Large Applications are due January 14, Medium Applications are due January 28, and Small Applications are due February 11, 2022. Funds to Bolster Health Services for Underserved Virginians
Virginia Health Care Foundation: Health Access Grants
The Virginia Health Care Foundation is a public-private partnership committed to increasing access to primary health care services for medically underserved and uninsured Virginians. The Foundation's Health Access Grants support organizations that work to increase access to primary care for uninsured Virginians and those who live in areas with limited access to care. Funding focuses on projects that address one or more of these priorities: developing or expanding patient capacity, establishing a broader scope of services, accelerating licensure of behavioral health professionals, creating local systems of care, and conquering the consequences of COVID-19. Nonprofit organizations and public agencies, including free clinics, community health centers, and other similar organizations, are eligible to apply. The concept paper deadline for spring 2022 is January 24. While not required, applicants are encouraged to contact a Foundation Program Officer to discuss their proposal before submitting a request. Grants Encourage Cultural Diversity in Oregon
Black United Fund of Oregon
The mission of the Black United Fund of Oregon is to assist in the social and economic development of Oregon's low-income communities and to contribute to a broader understanding of ethnic and culturally diverse groups. In 2022, the Fund will provide Standalone Grants ranging from $500 to $2,500 to approximately six to nine nonprofit organizations. In addition, three organizations will be awarded a $8,000 grant along with enrollment in the Fund's Nonprofit Leadership Program. For both types of grants, priority will be given to organizations that offer services to BIPOC business owners and community members; support BIPOC youth in achieving their career, college, and postsecondary aspirations; celebrate and showcase Oregon's diversity; and address systems change to counter Oregon's history of exclusionary and discriminatory policies towards ethnic and culturally diverse group. Nonprofit organizations in Oregon and Southwest Washington are eligible to apply. The application deadline is January 31, 2022. Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation
The mission of the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation is to improve energy efficiency, advance the development and use of renewable energy resources, and protect natural areas and wildlife habitat in communities all across Illinois. The Foundation is currently accepting applications for the following funding opportunities in the Natural Areas Program: Capacity Building, Land Acquisition, Planning for Land Acquisition, Community Stewardship Challenge Grant, K-12 Pollinator Schools Program, and Pollinator Meadows Program. Funds Available to Put Local Foods in Schools
Department of Agriculture
The Farm to School Grant Program provides support to plan, develop, and implement farm to school programs. The Program also seeks to improve access to local foods in USDA Food and Nutrition Child Nutrition Programs, including the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, Child and Adult Care Food Program, and Summer Food Service Program. Examples of supported activities include training, support for operations, purchase of equipment, school garden development, and partnership development. The application deadline is January 10, 2022.

Program Addresses Rural Opioid Use
Department of Health and Human Services
The Rural Communities Opioid Response Program—Implementation seeks to reduce the morbidity and mortality of substance use disorder, including opioid use disorder, in high-risk rural communities. The Program provides support to strengthen and expand prevention, treatment, and recovery services to enhance rural residents' ability to access treatment and move towards recovery. Target populations include individuals who are at risk for, have been diagnosed with, or are in treatment or recovery for opioid use disorder; their families or caregivers; and other community members who reside in rural areas. The application deadline is January 13, 2022.

Are You as Exhausted as I Am?

In the last few months, I've noticed a trend showing up in my meetings with folks from all kinds of organizations and in all sorts of roles: a new level of exhaustion is profoundly impacting so many of us. The work we are all doing is essential, and that's honestly part of the exhaustion. These conversations reflect that what folks are doing is so overwhelmingly important that the depth of exhaustion feels equally overwhelming. So, when this issue comes up, I've been making a point to also talk about what people are doing to manage and care for themselves. Here are some of the strategies that I've been using.
