Environmental Initiatives in Company Communities Funded
Patagonia Environmental Grants Program
The Patagonia Environmental Grants Program provides support for environmental work in countries where the Patagonia company does business, including the United States, Canada, Japan, Chile, Argentina, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Sweden, Spain, Norway, Luxembourg, Italy, Ireland, Germany, France, Denmark, Belgium, Austria, Australia, and the Czech Republic. Grants ranging from $2,500 to $15,000 are provided for small, grassroots, activist organizations with provocative direct-action agendas, working on multi-pronged campaigns to preserve and protect the environment. The company helps local groups working to protect local habitat. U.S. nonprofit organizations or organizations with a comparable fiscal sponsor are eligible to apply. Fellowship Supports Social Change Initiatives
Shuttleworth Foundation
The Shuttleworth Foundation is a small social investor that provides funding to dynamic leaders who are at the forefront of social change. Through the Fellowship Program, the Foundation enables individuals to implement their innovative ideas for social change. Priority is given to exceptional ideas at the intersection between technology, knowledge, and learning, with openness being the key requirement. Funding consists of two components, the fellowship grant and co-investment project funding of up to $250,000. Fellowships are available to people from all over the world, regardless of gender, age, nationality, or experience. Online applications must be submitted by May 14, 2017. Grants Promote World Peace
Niwano Peace Foundation
The Niwano Peace Foundation aims to contribute to the realization of world peace and the enhancement of culture by promoting research and other activities, based on a religious spirit. Grants of up to 1,000,000 Japanese yen are awarded in the following categories: social activities based on a religious spirit, including peace-making activities related to education, volunteer work, development cooperation, environmental protection, human rights, or social problems of an aging society; and grassroots activities deployed in a local community, including interdisciplinary workshops and meetings, with a particular emphasis on collaboration by groups and individuals from diverse organizations and religious groups. Individuals and organizations around the world are eligible to apply. The application deadlines are April 30 and August 13, 2017. Prize Honors Agricultural Achievements in Africa
Africa Food Prize
The Africa Food Prize recognizes an outstanding individual or institution that is leading the effort to change the reality of farming in Africa—from a struggle to survive to a business that thrives. The Prize puts a spotlight on bold initiatives and technical innovations that can be replicated across the continent to create a new era of food security and economic opportunity for all Africans. Nominees will be evaluated using the following criteria: a contribution to reducing poverty and hunger or improving food and nutrition security; a contribution to providing a vital source of income or employment; the potential for transformative change through scalability, replication, and sustainability; increased awareness and cooperation among African audiences and organizations; and proven leadership potential of the individual or organization, specifically the ability to persevere despite significant challenges or risks. Contributions to Girls' and Women's Education Recognized
UNESCO Prize for Girls’ and Women’s Education
The UNESCO Prize for Girls’ and Women’s Education honors outstanding innovation and contributions made by individuals, institutions, and organizations to advance girls’ and women’s education. The Prize is conferred annually to two laureates that have been working towards the advancement of girls’ and women’s education for two years or longer, and consists of an award of $50,000 each to further their work. Nominations must relate to an established project or program in one or more of the following areas: supporting girls to transition from primary education to lower-secondary education and to complete full basic education; supporting adolescent girls and young women to acquire literacy skills; supporting the creation of a gender-responsive and safe teaching-learning environment, free of school-related gender-based violence; engaging teachers to develop gender-responsive teaching attitudes and practices and be change agents; or supporting adolescent girls and young women to acquire knowledge and skills to adequately transition from school to work and lead a fulfilling life. Nominations can be made by Governments of UNESCO Member States via their Permanent Delegation to UNESCO, and non-governmental organizations in official partnership with UNESCO. Grants Enhance the Creativity of Photographers
Getty Images Grants: Editorial Grants
The aim of the Getty Images Grants program is to enable photographers to bring attention to significant social and cultural issues, and reach new creative heights. Support is currently available through the Editorial Grants program. Editorial Grants support independent photojournalists around the world by providing the creative freedom and collaborative editorial support necessary in their pursuit of work that is personally important to them and which they would otherwise not have the time or resources to address. Award Honors Food Reporting
Food Sustainability Media Award
The Food Sustainability Media Award, an initiative of the Thomson Reuters Foundation and the Barilla Center for Food and Nutrition, recognizes the work of professional journalists and emerging talent from all over the world for excellence in reporting and communicating issues related to food security, sustainability, agriculture, and nutrition. Awards are made in the categories of Written Journalism, Photography, and Video. For each category, one published and one unpublished piece of work will be awarded. Published winners will receive a €10,000 cash prize, while the winners awarded for their unpublished work will receive an all-expenses paid trip to attend the Foundation’s journalism training course on food sustainability. All winning unpublished work will also be distributed via the Thomson Reuters Foundation and BCFN websites, with the winning written unpublished submission being distributed via the Reuters wire as well. In addition, the Best of the Web Award, which also includes the training course, will go to the project that receives the highest number of votes on the Award website. Competition Seeks Ideas in the Areas of Water and Sanitation
RELX Group Environmental Challenge
The RELX Group Environmental Challenge is a skill-based competition in which participants are asked to submit proposals outlining innovative ideas that advance access to safe water or sanitation where access is presently at risk. Supported projects must set a benchmark for innovation and demonstrate replicability, scalability, and sustainability; practical applicability; non-discrimination/equity of access; involvement of, and impacts on, a range of stakeholders; and local/community-level engagement. The first and second place winners will receive cash awards of $50,000 and $25,000, respectively, to launch, sustain, or effectuate their winning proposal. The Challenge is open to individuals and organizations operating in the nonprofit and for-profit sectors. Applications must be submitted by May 15, 2017. MusiCounts: MusiCounts TD Community Music Program
MusiCounts aims to ensure that all children and youth in Canada have access to music education. The MusiCounts TD Community Music Program provides musical instruments and equipment to community centers, after-school programs, and other community nonprofit organizations that need instruments to ensure their music program’s sustained growth. Allotments ranging from $10,000 to $25,000 are provided to youth-oriented music programs in underserved communities. Nonprofit and registered charitable organizations with pre-existing or new music programs are eligible to apply. Organizations must operate outside of Provincial Departments of Education. Support for Environmental Protection in Canada and the U.S.
Fund for Wild Nature
The Fund for Wild Nature invests in bold grassroots organizations and innovative conservation efforts in Canada and the U.S. that meet emerging needs for protecting biodiversity and wilderness. The Fund provides grants of up to $3,000 for campaigns to save native species and wild ecosystems, with particular emphasis on actions designed to defend threatened wilderness and biological diversity. Support is provided for advocacy, litigation, public policy work, development of citizen science, and similar endeavors. U.S. and Canadian nonprofit organizations with annual budgets of under $250,000 are eligible to apply. The annual application deadlines are May 1 and October 1. Grants Improve the Quality of Life in Nova Scotia
Edwards Family Charitable Foundation
The Edwards Family Charitable Foundation seeks to enhance the quality of life, primarily within—but not limited to—Nova Scotia. Grants support initiatives that focus on the wellbeing of individuals, with a special emphasis on children, the community, education, medicine, and the arts, as well as innovative causes that promote social responsiveness. Funding Benefits Airport Communities Surrounding Toronto Pearson Airport
Toronto Pearson International Airport: Propeller Project
The Toronto Pearson International Airport's Propeller Project invests in social good and community-building initiatives in the area surrounding the airport. The Nest Fund (sponsorships under $25,000) provides support in the areas of environment, employment, and community vitality, including parks or playgrounds, community-building activities, and accessibility enhancements. The Uplift Fund (sponsorships of $25,000 and up) supports research, advocacy work, and programs that enable local area residents to gain the skills, connections, and opportunities to be meaningfully employed. Preference is given to initiatives that have a positive impact in neighborhoods surrounding Toronto Pearson (Etobicoke, Mississauga, and Brampton). Applications for the Nest Fund are accepted year-round. The upcoming application deadlines for the Uplift Fund are May 8 and August 7, 2017. Funds to Counter Wildlife Trafficking in Southeast Asia
Department of State
The Combating Wildlife Trafficking in Southeast Asia program seeks to fund projects that build Southeast Asia’s criminal judicial capacity to deter, investigate, and prosecute wildlife crime. The solicitation scope may also include money-laundering, corruption, illegal logging, and other crime areas that aid wildlife trafficking networks. Applications must be submitted by April 25, 2017.

The DRL Global Religious Freedoms - Europe and East Asia and the Pacific program supports projects that promote and protect religious freedom in the regions of Europe, East Asia, and the Pacific. The deadline to apply is April 26, 2017.

The Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage – Local Festivals component provides funding to local groups for recurring festivals that present the work of local artists, artisans, or heritage performers. Grants of up to $200,000 are awarded. The remaining application deadlines for 2017 are April 30 and September 30.
Economic Development Initiatives in Atlantic Canada Funded
Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency
The Innovative Communities Fund invests in strategic projects that build the economies of Atlantic Canada's communities. The Fund focuses on investments that lead to long-term employment and economic capacity building in rural communities. Urban initiatives that stimulate the competitiveness and vitality of rural communities may be considered on a selective basis. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Interested applicants should contact the nearest ACOA office to discuss their project before submitting the application form.
