Types of Grantmakers

The world of philanthropy is filled with different types of revenue sources to help nonprofit organizations fulfill their missions. These sources can be broken down into Grant Revenue and Non-Grant Revenue.

Grant Revenue

Grantmakers all have their own requirements and their own styles of giving. Understanding the different type of grantmakers will help you determine how they might fit into your overall funding strategy. As a general rule-of-thumb, you will want to start with local funders and then move your way up to regional and national funders.

Local Businesses

Businesses in your community, such as a local print shop or an independently-owned grocer, support nonprofit organizations in three ways: cash grants, product donations, and in-kind donations. (In-kind donations can include products, services, or volunteer labor and can be used to leverage other grants, so their value is considerable.)
