The REI Cooperative Action Fund is dedicated to nonprofit organizations promoting justice, equity, and belonging in the outdoors to strengthen the health and well-being of people and communities.

The Fund supports a broad range of nonprofit organizations, from local grassroots groups to national nonprofits to research universities. 

Grants are provided is the following categories:

Connecting People Outside
The focus is on organizations led by and serving Black and Indigenous communities, people of color, the LGBTQ+ community, low-income communities, people with disabilities, and women through connections to the outdoors.

Priority is given to organizations that cultivate connections, healing, and joy outside.

Creating Space Outside
The focus is on increasing equitable access to outdoor spaces and recreation opportunities (parks, trails, open space, waterways).

Priority is given to community-led solutions that bring nature’s individual and environmental benefits closer to home for Black and Indigenous communities, people of color, and low-income communities. 

Centering Health Outside
The focus is on investing, strengthening, and amplifying scientific research that demonstrates time spent outside improves mental, physical, and emotional health, as well as resilience for people and communities.

General operating support and project/program support are provided.

Restrictions Details

Grants are not provided to/for:

  • individuals;
  • political or religious organizations;
  • pre-K-12 schools;  or,
  • endowment campaigns.
