In the dynamic landscape of Ohio's nonprofit sector, Mark Cardwell stands out as a dedicated leader at the helm of the Ohio Association of Nonprofit Organizations (OANO) as interim executive director. With a deep passion for empowering nonprofits, Mark’s journey to this pivotal role is both inspiring and impactful.
Mark’s involvement with OANO began with a passion for nonprofit work and a desire to help organizations thrive. Initially starting as a consultant, he recognized the critical need for support within the sector. This commitment led him to engage with OANO, where he began offering marketing solutions tailored to the unique needs of nonprofits, helping them understand the environment that they’re in.
Through his dedication, Mark quickly evolved from a consultant to a board member, eventually stepping into the role of interim executive director this year. His extensive experience in arts administration provides him with a unique perspective on the challenges nonprofits face within the arts sector specifically, which he describes as an area he still loves to work with: “It’s something I understand.”
Taking on the role of interim executive director came with its own set of challenges. Despite these complexities, Mark benefits from the unwavering support of a committed board, allowing him to focus on making a meaningful impact.
“Being an interim means that you're kind of in charge, sort of,” Mark says. “There are things that you can do and things that you can’t do, and that sometimes is difficult.”
One of the most rewarding aspects of his work is witnessing the positive outcomes that arise from OANO’s support for nonprofits.
“I've always been real big on not just the edifices and the operations, but the people inside these nonprofit organizations,” Mark says. “Being a founder or an administrator comes with its own set of challenges when you're in the position to help alleviate those challenges for others, or help educate someone, or connect someone to a resource, but I see the relief that comes from that. That’s what really matters.”
Mark’s vision for OANO extends beyond immediate support; he aims to foster long-term growth and innovation within the nonprofit community. He emphasizes the importance of helping small and startup nonprofits, which often struggle to find the resources and expertise they need.
A particularly exciting focus for Mark is the integration of technology and artificial intelligence (AI) into nonprofit operations. Many nonprofits operate with limited staff and resources, and Mark believes that AI can assist with the more mundane tasks that come with running a nonprofit, allowing them to enhance their operations and outreach.
“I see artificial intelligence as a way to kind of level up these organizations,” Mark says.
As Mark leads OANO during this transitional period, his dedication to fostering collaboration, innovation, and inclusivity is clear. He envisions a future where nonprofits can thrive, driving positive change in communities across Ohio.
“I think that there’s a great future for the sector because of the possibilities that technology and collaboration present,” Mark says.
With a vision grounded in support and innovation, Mark is poised to help shape the future of Ohio’s nonprofits, ensuring they not only survive but thrive in an ever-changing landscape. Through his efforts, Mark Cardwell is not just leading OANO; he is championing a movement that empowers organizations to fulfill their vital missions in communities throughout the state.
