LevelUP sessions are not just lectures, they allow you to put theory into practice. You can expect: 

  • frequent interaction with both Stephanie and other course participants (please be prepared to share your video and sound);
  • to discuss social enterprise options that are aligned with your organization’s assets;
  • opportunities for feedback and questions; and,
  • Stephanie to challenge you to make calculated assessments of your social enterprise options so you can build a sustainable business. 

You’ll receive the following materials: 

  • detailed case studies of nonprofits that launched social enterprises during the pandemic;   
  • lifetime access to recordings of each session;                  
  • an electronic copy of Social Enterprise for Nonprofits; and,

Stephanie Sample is the Founder and CEO of Fundraising for the Future. Over the last seven years, she has supported nonprofits in finding their comfort zone with social enterprise profitability, including:

  • identifying and eliminating high cost/low return fundraising streams to focus energy on profitable enterprises;

Session Details

Session 1: Social Enterprise Demystified: Who? What? How? When?

In this session, we will cover the following topics:

  • an introduction to social enterprise, including what social enterprise is;
  • who operates successful enterprises, including social enterprise case studies;
  • how to create buy-in for social enterprise, including examining the importance of stakeholders in your SE plan; and,
  • the values and culture your organization needs to foster in order to support a successful social enterprise.

This session will be held on Friday, September 16, 2022, 2-4pm EST.


Session 2: Selecting Your Enterprise: Beyond Thrift Shops

In this session, we will cover the following topics:

  • social enterprise mindset and the perennial budgeting technique, including identifying where enterprise already exists in your organization;
  • the nuts and bolts of purchasing existing businesses;
  • how to conduct an asset inventory, including identifying organizational strengths to launch your business; and,
  • developing objective criteria, including the framework for evaluating your options for social enterprises.

This session will be held on Friday, September 30, 2022, 2-4pm EST.


Session 3: Market Research and Feasibility

In this session, we will cover the following topics:

  • how to conduct market research for your enterprise in order to determine your direct and indirect competition;
  • how to define your ideal target market and identify potential customers;
  • costing and the break-even point, including calculating your profit margin for startup and Year 1 operations; and,
  • how to conduct a competitive analysis in order to find your competitive edge.

This session will be held on Friday, October 14, 2022, 2-4pm EST.


Session 4: Sales and Marketing Your Business

In this session, we will cover the following topics:

  • the elements in a sales plan, including how it ties directly to nonprofit strategic planning;
  • promotional strategies, including how to increase the visibility of your product or service;
  • market positioning, including identifying your position in the marketplace and evaluating the potential of different markets; and,
  • distribution methods you can use to ensure accessibility of your product or service.

This session will be held on Friday, October 28, 2022, 2-4pm EST.


Session 5: Elements of Your Social Enterprise Business Plan

In this session, we will cover the following topics:

  • the basics of enterprise budget building, including projecting startup costs for Year 1;
  • cash flow projections, including tools for projecting operating costs and revenue for Year 1;
  • preparing to share your plan with investors, including templates for building a business plan; and,
  • setting short term and long-term profitability goals.

This session will be held on Friday, November 11, 2022, 2-4pm EST.


Session 6: Funding Your Social Enterprise

In this session, we will cover the following topics:

  • an overview of venture funding sources, including secured and unsecured loans, angel investors, and funding campaigns;
  • deciding which funding source is right for you, including tools for evaluating lenders and investors;
  • funding your own business, including fundraising communications for your social enterprise campaign;
  • components of purchasing existing businesses and best practices for receiving in-kind donations; and,
  • next steps for your organization’s social enterprise journey.

This session will be held on Friday, November 18, 2022, 2-4pm EST.
