Some grantmakers are more approachable than others. Some have easier applications. Some have fewer requirements when providing awards. Some like to provide start up funds, and others like to be the “last dollar in.” Considering these types of issues, here is some general advice on what order to use when approaching grantmakers.

Start with these grantmakers:

Local Businesses
Community Foundations
Family Foundations
Giving Circles

You can then move on to these to these grantmakers:

Associations and Societies (local)
Independent Foundations (small and local)
Government Funding (local and regional)
Corporate Giving Programs

Then you are ready to approach these grantmakers:

Corporate Foundations
Associations and Societies (regional, national, and international)
