The It Gets Better Project, supported by American Eagle and Aerie, funds efforts that uplift, empower, and connect LGBTQ+ youth in schools in all 50 states.  

Grants up to $10,000 will be awarded to middle and high school students, advised by faculty members, in every U.S. state, including U.S. territories, to support projects that prioritize the empowerment and well-being of LGBTQ+ youth while at school.

Types of projects include the following:

School-Wide Projects
Examples of projects include, but are not limited to:

  • building an LGBTQ+ section for books and other resources in a school library;
  • painting a mural or other art installation in a school highlighting local LGBTQ+ history; and,
  • providing LGBTQ+ inclusive training for a school's staff.

Gender-Sexuality Alliance (GSA) Projects
Examples of projects include, but are not limited to:

  • launching a school’s first GSA;
  • installing a school garden or gender-affirming closet that supports the GSA;
  • providing leadership training for GSA student leaders; and,
  • providing LGBTQ+ history webinars for students.

Community Projects
Examples of projects include, but are not limited to:

  • organizing a school float for a city’s Pride Parade;
  • helping establish a student-focused program with a local LGBTQ+ center or nonprofit; and,
  • establishing a partnership between the LGBTQ+ students at school with LGBTQ+ seniors in the community.

Grants are not provided to/for:

  • research;
  • political activities;
  • scholarships; or,
  • individual needs.
