Call for Proposals Strengthens Childhood Obesity Prevention Efforts

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation: Addressing Childhood Obesity and Health Inequities

Application deadline: June 27, 2024, for concept papers
Geographic scope: United States, including U.S. territories
Grant amount: Up to $22 million total will be distributed through awards of a minimum of $1,000,000. The Foundation anticipates making up to six awards.
Description: Through the Addressing Childhood Obesity and Health Inequities call for proposals, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation aims to advance efforts that will support, sustain, and evolve the work of organizations and communities that have been at the forefront of equity-oriented childhood obesity prevention in the United States. Support will be provided for projects with the potential to support, sustain, and evolve the field in promoting systems-level change to prevent childhood obesity, address structural racism, and advance health equity. The Foundation is especially interested in projects that aim to address structural racism and other systems that perpetuate health inequities; respond to gaps in evidence or action identified by the field; engage with communities most impacted by childhood obesity and nutrition insecurity and organizations focused on people of color; and leverage and complement existing field assets. Within those broad goals, supported strategies may include but are not limited to influencing policy and systems change, producing and disseminating actionable evidence and data, catalyzing investment in communities, and changing narratives.

Manufacturing Skills Training Programs Supported

Teshinsky Family Foundation: Manufacturing Workforce Training Grant

Application deadline: July 26, 2024, for inquiry forms
Geographic scope: Continental United States
Grant amount: $25,000 to $100,000
Description: The Teshinsky Family Foundation is dedicated to promoting personal liberty, economic freedom, and career opportunities through support, training, and accountability. Through the Manufacturing Workforce Training Grant request for proposals, the Foundation seeks to support nonprofit organizations that run manufacturing skills training programs. Program grants cover direct training and program costs and equipment and capital grants support updating equipment, purchasing new equipment, and updating or enhancing facilities leading to more effective and efficient training. Supported training programs should be offered at no cost for participants (a compensation or stipend for participants is preferred) and include training to acquire skills needed for jobs in manufacturing and to build skills needed to succeed in a professional manufacturing work environment. Supported programs should also include case management services and demonstrate relationships with area manufacturing employers leading to career placements.

One $100 Million Grant Provided to Solve a Critical Challenge

MacArthur Foundation: 100&Change

Application deadline: August 15, 2024
Geographic scope: Global
Grant amount: One $100 million grant will be provided.
Description: MacArthur Foundation has launched a new round of its 100&Change competition, which will award a single $100 million grant to help solve one of the world's most critical social challenges. 100&Change is open to organizations and collaborations working in any field, anywhere in the world. Proposals should address a significant problem and provide a solution that is impactful, evidence-based, feasible, durable, and just.

Funding Promotes Responsible Recreational Land Use

Yamaha Outdoor Access Initiative

Application deadlines: The remaining quarterly deadlines for 2024 are June 30, September 30, and December 15.
Description: The Yamaha Outdoor Access Initiative provides support for efforts that promote safe, responsible use of off-highway vehicles, educate the public on proper recreational land use and wildlife conservation practices, and protect appropriate and sustainable access to public lands. Support is provided to nonprofit and tax-exempt groups, including clubs and associations, public riding areas, outdoor enthusiast associations, land conservation organizations, and communities with an interest in protecting, improving, expanding, and maintaining access for safe, responsible, and sustainable use by motorized off-road vehicles. Examples of funded projects include trail development and maintenance, trail signage, stage area renovations and facilities, protecting environmentally sensitive areas from illegal or inadvertent off-highway vehicle use, safety and education, wildlife and land management projects, and efforts establishing or increasing access to land for outdoor recreation.

Grants Sustain Traditional Arts in California

Alliance for California Traditional Arts: Living Cultures Grant

Application deadline: Applications will be accepted from June 5 to July 31, 2024.
Geographic scope: California
Grant amount: $7,500 for individuals and $10,000 for nonprofit organizations and groups
Description: The Alliance for California Traditional Arts (ACTA) promotes and supports ways for cultural traditions to thrive now and into the future. ACTA’s Living Cultures Grant program seeks to sustain and strengthen traditional arts in California through grants to individual artists and culture bearers, nonprofits and tribal nations, and other organizations and community groups working with fiscal sponsors. Support is provided for projects that nurture cultural continuity through the learning and practice of traditional arts, sustain cultural practices with needed purchases and services, and engage communities through public programs. Projects involving any genre of traditional arts, including but not limited to dance, music, foodways, material arts, and oral traditions, are supported.

Support Enhances Education for Minnesota Children and Youth

Ciresi Walburn Foundation

Application deadline: Letters of inquiry will be accepted from June 17 to July 12, 2024.
Geographic scope: Minnesota
Description: The mission of the Ciresi Walburn Foundation is to serve as a catalyst for creative, innovative, and societal-changing programs and policies to promote education and equitable opportunities for all of Minnesota’s children and youth. The Foundation partners with 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, higher education institutions, and K-12 schools that support youth and families in Minnesota. Support is provided in the following priority areas: eliminating the misconception that Minnesota schools provide a quality education for all children; expanding the number and capacity of high-performing schools and educational organizations throughout Minnesota serving students of color and low-income students; supporting parent and family engagement in schools and their demands for access to high-performing schools for all students; investing in strategies to diversify Minnesota’s educator workforce and equip teachers with the cultural intelligence and skills needed to support and educate all students; and expanding access to science-based literacy instruction, high-quality early childhood learning opportunities, equitable pathways to in-demand careers, and scalable, high-quality tutoring programs.

Community Investment Program Benefits Railroad Communities

CSX Community Investment Program

Application deadline: None
Geographic scope: AL, CT, DE, FL, GA, IL, IN, KY, LA, ME, MD, MA, MI, MS, NH, NJ, NY, NC, OH, PA, SC, TN, VT, VA, Washington DC, WV, and ON and QC in Canada
Grant amount: Pride in Service Grants range from $2,500 to $25,000. Community Service Grants range from $1,000 to $5,000.
Description: The CSX Community Investment Program provides support for organizations in the communities where the company’s employees live and work, primarily in the Eastern, Southern, and Midwest regions of the United States. Support is primarily provided through the Pride in Service Grants, which support organizations that serve veterans, active military members, first responders, and their families. Community Service Grants are also available, focusing on local and regional organizations that serve the needs of company communities. In-kind donations of transportation services, equipment, or materials are also provided. Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations; state, county, and municipal government entities, including law enforcement and fire rescue departments; and pre-K-12 schools, charter schools, community and junior colleges, and colleges and universities.

Texas Pride Impact Funds: Community Grants

Application deadline: July 12, 2024
Geographic scope: Texas
Grant amount: Up to $10,000
Description: Texas Pride Impact Funds (TPIF) seeks to enrich the lives of LGBTQ+ Texans for generations to come. TPIF’s Community Grants provide support to nonprofits serving LGBTQ+ communities in Texas. In an effort to support and build capacity in LGBTQ+ communities that have been historically disadvantaged, TPIF prioritizes funding to the following focus communities and populations: underserved geographies (rural areas, border communities, towns and small cities, and under-resourced areas and neighborhoods within urban centers), people of transgender experience, people of color, seniors, youth, people with disabilities, people living with and at higher risk for HIV/AIDS, and displaced people (immigrants, homeless youth, refugees, and incarcerated individuals). Funds are provided for general operating support.

Funds Help Socially Disadvantaged and Veteran Farmers and Ranchers

Department of Agriculture

Application deadline: July 5, 2024
Description: The overall goal of the Outreach and Assistance for Socially Disadvantaged Farmers and Ranchers and Veteran Farmers and Ranchers Program is to encourage and assist underserved farmers and ranchers, military veteran farmers and ranchers, and beginning farmers and ranchers with owning and operating farms and ranches and in participating equitably in the full range of agricultural, forestry, and related programs offered by USDA. It also includes projects that develop underserved youths' interest in agriculture. Eligible entities may compete for funding on projects that provide education and training in agriculture, agribusiness, forestry, agricultural-related services, and USDA programs, and to conduct outreach initiatives designed to accomplish those goals.

Pool Safety Efforts Supported

Consumer Product Safety Commission

Application deadline: July 12, 2024
Description: The Pool Safely Grant Program’s purpose is to provide state and local governments with assistance to help implement enforcement and education programs, with the goal of preventing drowning and drain entrapments of children in pools and spas. At least 25 percent of funding must be used to hire and train enforcement personnel for implementation and enforcement of standards under the state or local swimming pool and spa safety law (i.e., “code enforcement”), and the remainder may be used to educate pool construction and installation companies and pool service companies about the standards; educate pool owners, pool operators, and other members of the public about the standards under the swimming pool and spa safety law and about the prevention of drowning or entrapment of children using swimming pools and spas; or defray administrative costs associated with such training and education programs.
