In proposal development, there is something called the 80/20 rule. The 80/20 rule states that when you develop your grant applications, 80% of your time should be spent in the planning phase. If you invest your time and energy in the planning, writing the proposal should only take 20% of your time.
Without planning, writing proposals can become overwhelming and confusing. If your first attempt at writing a proposal is sitting down with the application instructions and answering questions, chances are you will create a disjointed application. Without planning, the project narrative usually gets confusing, as the information doesn’t connect to form a coherent story throughout the proposal. This can make the entire process downright frustrating.
