Statement of Need

by Cynthia M. Adams, CEO, GrantStation.com

It is extremely important for the LOI to articulate the problem or need clearly, and develop a compelling argument for funding. It is also important to articulate the opportunity for the grantmaker to invest in your project. You may want to consider one or more of the following methods to document the current situation:

  • Perform a needs survey.
  • Cite statistics from articles and research.
  • Quote community leaders or experts in the field.
  • Use case histories.
  • Describe a national need and focus it on your area.
  • State needs in terms of one person, such as a village resident or group member.

You will probably add more detail to the statement of need when you write the full proposal. Remember, it is very important to create a compelling reason for the grantmaker to request a full proposal, so don't limit the time and effort you put into writing this section.
