Grants Strengthen U.S. Fire Departments

Leary Firefighters Foundation: Jeremiah Lucey Grant Program

Application deadline: August 15, annually, for letters of inquiry
Grant amount: $2,500 to $25,000
Description: The Leary Firefighters Foundation is dedicated to enhancing fire departments across the United States. Through the Jeremiah Lucey Grant Program, the Foundation provides funding to paid and volunteer fire departments throughout the country in the following areas: training to enhance the professional development of departments; equipment, so that fire departments are outfitted with the best possible equipment to help keep firefighters and the communities they serve safe; and technology, to ensure that fire departments update along with technological advances.

Support Enhances Gender, Environmental, and Economic Justice

JustPax Fund

Application deadline: August 1, 2023
Grant amount: Up to $25,000
Description: The JustPax Fund provides support to nonprofit organizations across the United States that are engaged in gender, environmental, and economic justice initiatives. The Fund invests in projects and initiatives that bring innovative and novel approaches to justice advocacy, research, and implementation, and seeks proposals that create space for critical inquiry, generating awareness, and promoting solutions to the most complex societal challenges facing the global community. Molded by the values of the Anabaptist and Believer’s Church Tradition that embrace service, justice, tolerance, mutuality, and religious liberty, the Fund welcomes proposals that address gender, environmental, and economic justice as applicable or relevant to that tradition, though applications stemming from other faith traditions and belief systems are also welcome. In 2023, the Fund anticipates awarding a total of up to $400,000. (Grants to organizations outside the U.S. may be considered as long as the recipient is associated with a U.S. tax exempt organization.)

Animal-Assisted Activities Serving Military and Veterans Funded

The Latham Foundation for the Promotion of Humane Education

Application deadline: Applications will be accepted from July 1 to July 8, 2023.
Grant amount: Up to $10,000
Description: The Latham Foundation for the Promotion of Humane Education seeks to promote humane education, defined as working to help others by showing respect, compassion, and empathy toward animals, others, and all endeavors. The Foundation’s grant program promotes humane education through animal-assisted activities where both animals and people benefit. For 2023, priority is given to programs that include services to military, veterans, first-responders, and their families. Supported programs should focus on the first four of the Latham Steps in humane education: kindness to animals, kindness to each other, kindness to other people, and kindness to our country. U.S. organizations with domestic programs are eligible to apply. (Nonprofit organizations have priority, but grants are not limited to those who have attained 501(c)(3) status.) Application information is available on the Foundation’s website. (This is an annual grant and the specific terms of each year are posted by May 1, annually, on the website.)

Grants Aid Bookmobiles Targeting Underserved Children

Lois Lenski Covey Foundation: Bookmobile Grant Program

Application deadline: September 1, annually
Geographic scope: United States and U.S. territories or commonwealths
Grant amount: $500 to $3,000 
Description: The purposes of The Lois Lenski Covey Foundation are to advance literacy and foster a love of reading among underserved and at-risk children and youth in the United States. The Foundation’s Bookmobile Grant Program supports organizations operating lending bookmobiles that travel into neighborhoods populated by underserved youth. Bookmobiles operated by 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations and other non-taxable agencies, including public libraries or schools, are eligible. The grants are for purchasing books published for young people from preschool through grade 8, and cannot be used for administrative or operational uses.

Funding Advances Systemic Change in North Carolina

Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation: State-Level Systemic Change

Application deadline: July 27, 2023
Geographic scope: North Carolina
Description: The Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation (ZSR) is committed to improving the quality of life for all North Carolinians. ZSR’s State-Level Systemic Change strategy supports state, regional, and local organizations, coalitions, or collaboratives that are working to achieve systemic change at the state level within and across the following priority areas: advancing public education, fostering a healthy and sustainable environment, promoting social and economic justice, and strengthening democracy. Supported approaches include, but are not limited to, advocacy, applied research, communications and digital media, leadership development, legal and litigation, organizing and mobilizing, and training and education. Particular emphasis is given to work targeted at improving opportunities and outcomes for populations who have been historically marginalized, subjected to systemic discrimination, or excluded from full participation in society.

Laptop and Internet Donations Benefit Students in 50 Cities

Mobile Beacon Connect for Success Student Access Donation Program

Application deadline: None
Geographic scope: 50 cities across the U.S.
Grant amount: Donations of up to 25 laptops, hotspots, and free internet service are provided. 
Description: Mobile Beacon's Connect for Success Student Access Donation Program aims to expand access to technology for students and school communities with digital inequities. The program provides schools, colleges, and universities in 50 cities across the U.S. within Sprint's 4G LTE service area with donations of up to 25 laptops and 4G LTE hotspots with free mobile LTE high-speed internet service for 12 months. The donations allow schools to provide students without internet access at home with the tools, connectivity, and hardware they need to complete homework assignments, access educational resources at home, and keep up with their peers. After the free internet service period ends, schools may apply for ongoing, unlimited LTE internet service at a significantly discounted rate.

Wisconsin Conservation Efforts Supported

James E. Dutton Foundation

Geographic scope: Wisconsin
Description: The James E. Dutton Foundation works towards protecting the outdoors, so it can provide a healthy home for wildlife and be a place where humans can learn, experience nature, and enrich their lives. In general, the Foundation supports endeavors that provide care for wildlife or domestic animal rescue; enhance wildlife populations through habitat conservation, improvement, and restoration; or encourage responsible land management, increased public awareness of conservation issues, and education about the environment. Grant requests are evaluated on how well they positively impact the environment, wildlife, and animal life, or enhance human life through nature-related activities and education.

Grants Promote Access to Healthcare in Virginia

Virginia Health Care Foundation: Health Access Grants

Application deadline: The fall 2023 deadline for concept papers is July 14.
Geographic scope: Virginia
Description: The Virginia Health Care Foundation’s Health Access Grants seek to increase access to medical, dental, and mental healthcare for uninsured Virginians and those who live in areas with limited access to care. Applications are encouraged for initiatives in the following areas, based on local needs: developing or expanding capacity, establishing a broader scope of services, accelerating licensure of behavioral health professionals, creating local coordinated systems of care, and conquering the consequences of COVID-19. Eligible applicants include public agencies, nonprofit organizations, and organizations with a nonprofit fiscal sponsor, including free clinics and community health centers.

Program Supports War Reflection

National Endowment for the Humanities

Description: The Dialogues on the Experience of War program supports the study and discussion of humanities sources that address the experiences of military service and war from a wide variety of perspectives. Dialogue projects encourage veterans and nonveterans to reflect collectively on such topics as civic engagement, veteran identity, and the legacies of war, service, and homecoming. Project teams should include humanities scholars, military veterans, and individuals with relevant experience.

Department of Agriculture

Application deadline: July 25, 2023
Description: The goal of the Outreach and Assistance for Socially Disadvantaged Farmers and Ranchers and Veteran Farmers and Ranchers program is to encourage and assist underserved farmers and ranchers, military veteran farmers and ranchers, and beginning farmers and ranchers with owning and operating farms and ranches and in participating equitably in the full range of agricultural, forestry, and related programs offered by USDA. The program also supports projects that develop underserved youth’s interest in agriculture.
