Dispute Resolution Initiatives Funded

American Arbitration Association/International Centre for Dispute Resolution Foundation

Application deadline: Initial descriptions of grant requests are due on September 8, 2023.
Geographic scope: United States and internationally
Grant amount: $50,000 to $250,000
Description: The mission of the American Arbitration Association/International Centre for Dispute Resolution (AAA-ICDR) Foundation is to support the prevention and resolution of conflicts by expanding access to alternative dispute resolution in the U.S.A. and internationally. Through its 2024 Annual Grant Cycle, the Foundation invites proposals that utilize alternative dispute resolution to address any of the following priority areas: 1) bridging community conflict, with a focus on civil discourse seeking to mend societal divisions; 2) preventing and reducing violence, with a focus on vulnerable and underserved communities and police/social service partnerships; and 3) supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion, with a focus on access to justice.

Program Supports School-Based Businesses

School Enterprise Challenge

Application deadline: The remaining deadlines for 2023 are August 23 and November 23.
Grant amount: Twenty-six prizes ranging from $180 to $5,000 will be awarded, totaling over $20,000.
Description: The School Enterprise Challenge, an initiative of Teach A Man To Fish, is an entrepreneurial program that provides young people with the skills to launch and run their own sustainable, profitable businesses. The program supports teachers and students to plan and set up a real business at their school. Schools participating in the Challenge must complete three steps: 1) coming up with a business idea; 2) creating a sustainable business plan; and 3) launching and running a school-based business. Profits are reinvested into their business, and can also be used to support their schools, their community, or a social cause. The Challenge is open to pre-primary and primary schools, secondary schools, and technical/vocational colleges from any country. (Universities are not eligible.)

Award Honors Contributions to Sustainable Urban Development

Dubai International Best Practices Award for Sustainable Development

Application deadline: August 31, 2023
Grant amount: Awards totaling $1,000,000 will be made. 
Description: The Dubai International Best Practices Award for Sustainable Development recognizes excellence and supports urban best practices to improve the living environment. The Award recognizes the world's best practices that demonstrate valuable contributions to sustainable urban development, as a result of effective partnerships between public, private, and civic sectors. Award categories consist of urban regeneration and public spaces; the most iconic, sustainable, innovative, and smart building in the world; sustaining urban food systems; addressing climate change and reducing pollution; and urban infrastructure planning and management. Non-governmental organizations, academic institutions, media entities, companies, national and local governments, and individuals are eligible for the Award.

Challenge Seeks Water Solutions

World Water Challenge

Application deadline: August 27, 2023
Grant amount: The first place winner receives KRW 10,000,000 (approx. $7,600), and the second place winner receives KRW 3,000,000 (approx. $2,200).
 Description: The World Water Challenge, a program of Korea International Water Week, is an international contest for water solutions. The Challenge serves as a platform to share not only innovative scientific and technological methods but also policy towards solving the defined water challenges around the world. It also aims to forge a broad network among the experts and stakeholders in the water sector as well as the diverse pool of solution providers. Eligible topics consist of Water and Wastewater Treatment, Efficient Water Management, Water and Natural Disasters, Smart Water Technologies, and Ecosystem and Water. Anyone (as an individual or on behalf of an organization) who is interested in contributing to resolving water related challenges with creative and applicable solutions is eligible to apply.

Grants Target Populations Impacted by HIV in Latin America and the Caribbean

Gilead Corporate Giving: Zeroing In: Latin America & The Caribbean Region

Application deadline: Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until September 15, 2023.
Grant amount: Grants range up to $100,000 for individual organizations and up to $250,000 for collaborative requests that include two or more organizations.
Geographic scope: Latin America and the Caribbean
Description: Gilead’s Zeroing In grant program in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) aims to increase the overall health and wellness of priority populations that have been most impacted by HIV in LAC, including men who have sex with men, transgender women, sex workers, people who inject drugs and their sexual partners, and aging, Indigenous, or migrant populations. Projects should focus on improving access to comprehensive care among priority populations most affected by HIV, decreasing stigmatization of HIV patients within the LAC region, and addressing inequities in HIV screening, diagnostics, and care. Supported activities include innovative comprehensive HIV programs, culturally and socially-affirming support services, and community outreach and education. Programs should be community-driven and utilize evidence-based strategies for HIV prevention and care. Registered LAC-based nonprofit organizations are eligible to apply.

Emergency Funds Promote Resilience and Recovery in Ukraine

German Marshall Fund of the United States: Ukraine: Relief, Resilience, Recovery

Application deadline: Proposals will be received and evaluated on an ongoing basis.
Geographic scope: Ukraine
Grant amount: Grants range up to $25,000 over three to 12 months.
Description: The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) is a nonpartisan American public policy organization committed to the idea that the United States and Europe are stronger together. GMF’s Ukraine: Relief, Resilience, Recovery (U3R) emergency program, created in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine, supports Ukrainian citizens, civic activists and civil society organizations, and journalists and independent media. Funding is provided to civic initiatives, civil society organizations, and independent media outlets as well as targeted capacity-building measures, Ukrainian civil society networking and cooperation, and policy initiatives by Ukrainian experts and think tanks. Projects should be initiated by civil society organizations and independent media legally registered in Ukraine, which are based or relocated to and working from Ukraine and neighboring countries.

Global Partnership for Education: Knowledge and Innovation Exchange: KIX Call for Proposals

Application deadline: August 28, 2023
Geographic scope: GPE partner countries in lower-income countries
Grant amount:  Projects targeting a single country - CA$300,000 to $500,000; projects targeting three or more countries - CA$800,000 to $1,500,000; and regional and global level projects - up to CA$2,500,000
Description: The Global Partnership for Education (GPE) is a global fund dedicated to transforming education in lower-income countries. In partnership with the International Development Research Centre, GPE has issued the Knowledge and Innovation Exchange (KIX) call for proposals supporting applied research projects to generate and mobilize evidence in support of contextualizing and scaling the impact of innovative approaches to strengthen gender-responsive and socially inclusive education and safe schooling experiences for all children, especially those facing multiple forms of gender inequalities and marginalization. Priority sub-themes include inclusive and gender-responsive curriculum, pedagogies, and leadership as well as safe, inclusive, and supportive schools for all.

Call Aims to Reduce Emissions in Developing Countries

Climate and Clean Air Coalition

Application deadline: September 10, 2023
Grant amount: The total amount available for this call is $4 million with a maximum of $800,000 available per project.
Geographic scope: Developing countries
Description: The Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) funds projects in developing countries to enable climate and clean air actions delivering multiple development benefits. Through the "2023 Call for Proposals to Advance Transformative Change in Key Sectors", CCAC will support projects that pilot an innovative approach to mitigating short-lived climate pollutant (SLCP) emissions in at least one of the main SLCP emitting sectors: agriculture, cooling, fossil fuels, heavy-duty vehicles and engines, household energy, or waste. Proposals should contribute to advancing the CCAC Engagement Strategies and include at least one of the following: a technical or technology solution, an economic incentive or business model, behavioral or social change, a regulation or regulatory enforcement regime, a solution to unlock finance and investment, or a global or regional strategy for sector transformation. The CCAC can only fund nonprofit entities, which include non-governmental organizations, intergovernmental organizations, and government authorities.

Grant amount: Approximately 40 grants ranging from $15,000 to $35,000 will be awarded.
Geographic scope: Global
Description: Through the Global Media Defence Fund, UNESCO is seeking partnerships with nonprofit organizations to support projects that bolster journalists’ legal protection or enhance media freedom through relevant investigative journalism or strategic litigation.

Geographic scope: Afghanistan
Description: The Countering Trafficking in Persons in Afghanistan program aims to counter trafficking in persons (TIP) in Afghanistan through partnering with and strengthening the capacities of Afghan civil society organizations (CSOs). Focus areas include provision of support services to vulnerable people through prevention, victim protection, recovery support services, and empowering CSOs to combat TIP.
