Funds to Raise Youth Awareness About Discrimination
Foundation Remembrance, Responsibility, and Future: Europeans for Peace Program
The Foundation Remembrance, Responsibility and Future (Foundation EVZ) works to promote human rights and understanding between peoples. The Europeans for Peace program supports international school and youth projects between Germany and the countries of Central, Eastern, and South-Eastern Europe, as well as Israel. In these projects, young people actively explore the subjects of discrimination and persecution under National Socialism or present-day discrimination issues. Grants of up to 30,000 euros are provided for binational or trinational projects targeting youth between the ages of 14 and 21. School and youth groups from Germany, together with a partner from Central, Eastern or South-Eastern Europe or from Israel, are eligible to apply. The deadline to apply is December 1, 2016. Grants Protect Democracy, Freedom, and the Environment
Wallace Global Fund
The mission of the Wallace Global Fund is to promote an informed and engaged citizenry, fight injustice, and protect the diversity of nature and the natural systems upon which all life depends. The Fund’s strategy is shaped by these key trends: the rise of the global corporatist state, threats to democracy and rights, ecological collapse, and the power differential and weakened non-governmental organizations. Funding priorities consist of challenging corporate power, defending and renewing democracy, protecting the environment, promoting truth and creative freedom in media, and advancing women’s human rights and empowerment. The Fund provides core or project-specific support for activities and movements that are global or national in scope, and will consider significant local or regional initiatives with the potential to leverage broader national or global impact. U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations and organizations outside the U.S. with equivalent status are eligible to apply. Online letters of inquiry are accepted throughout the year. Funding Targets Eastern Africa
Open Society Foundations: Open Society Initiative for Eastern Africa
The Open Society Foundations work to build vibrant and tolerant democracies whose governments are accountable and open to the participation of all people. The Open Society Initiative for Eastern Africa (OSIEA) plays an active role in encouraging open, informed dialogue on issues of importance in Eastern Africa. OSIEA supports projects in the following programmatic areas: Media and Access to Information, Governance and Accountability, Health and Rights, Justice and Human Rights, and Regional Programs. Grants typically range from $10,000 to $200,000. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis. The application guidelines and form may be downloaded from the Open Society Foundations website.

Land Protection Initiatives Supported
Rainforest Trust: SAVES Conservation Program
The Rainforest Trust helps protect threatened tropical forests and endangered wildlife by partnering with local and community organizations in and around vulnerable areas. Through the SAVES Conservation program, the Trust accepts partnership applications to create new Protected Areas, including those created through land purchase, designation as a national park, conversion of logging concessions to reserves, community protection, or the expansion of existing Protected Areas. Priority is given to proposed sites located within the Tropics. In addition, Rapid Protected-Area Feasibility Awards encourage conservationists and researchers to evaluate important potential sites for creating new Protected Areas. The annual deadlines to submit a partnership application are April 1, July 1, and December 1. Applications for Rapid Protected-Area Feasibility Awards are reviewed on a rolling basis. Grants Enhance the Quality of Life for Individuals with Disabilities
Abilis Foundation
The Abilis Foundation funds projects that are planned, implemented, and monitored by people with disabilities in developing countries. Funding is provided for projects that promote the human rights, participation, independent living, education, and employment of individuals with disabilities in developing countries. Organizations from developing countries that are run by people with disabilities or parents of children with disabilities are eligible to apply. Applications are accepted throughout the year. Funding Enables Artists to Undertake Projects in the U.S.
CEC ArtsLink: Independent Projects
CEC ArtsLink supports exchange between artists and arts organizations in the United States and countries and territories in Central/Eastern Europe, Russia, Central Asia, the Caucasus, and the Eastern Mediterranean. Independent Projects awards provide funding to artists and arts managers who propose to undertake projects in the United States in collaboration with a U.S. nonprofit arts organization or individual artist. Support is provided to create new work that draws inspiration from interaction with artists and the community in the U.S.; to establish mutually beneficial exchange of ideas and expertise between artists, arts organizations, and the local community; and to pursue artistic cooperation that will enrich creative or professional development or has potential to expand the community's access to the art of other cultures. Applicants must have a letter of invitation from a U.S. partner. The application deadline is December 5, 2016. Funding Improves Incomes and Food Security in Selected Countries
Global Agriculture and Food Security Program
The Global Agriculture and Food Security Program (GAFSP), a multilateral funding mechanism, has issued a call for proposals to fund strategic programs to alleviate poverty, improve rural incomes, and improve food and nutrition security in eligible countries. Areas of interest include raising agricultural productivity, linking farmers to markets, reducing risk and vulnerability, improving non-farm rural livelihoods, and technical assistance and institutional support. Two financing windows are available: The Public Sector Window, through grants, finances public investment and technical assistance to support implementation of country-led initiatives. The Private Sector Window provides long- and short-term loans, credit guarantees, equity investment, and technical assistance to the private sector for activities in agricultural development and food security. Approximately $125 million will be allocated to roughly the three to five highest ranked proposals. Applications must be submitted electronically by January 9, 2017. Initiatives to Expand Children’s Access to Books Funded
Results in Education for All Children (REACH) Trust Fund/Global Book Alliance: REACH for Reading
The REACH for Reading call for proposals is a joint initiative of the Results in Education for All Children (REACH) Trust Fund, housed at the World Bank, and the Global Book Alliance, a multi-partner alliance. This call supports innovations that get the right books to all children at the right time. Funding is provided for high quality, robust, cost-effective, and scalable experiments designed to transform the quality and availability of textbooks and reading books through results-based financing models. ICT and digital interventions to increase efficiencies along the book chain, from content delivery to production to supply chain logistics, are also considered. Supported interventions should focus on primary grade books for reading instruction and practice in underserved languages. Eligible applicants include governments, non-governmental organizations, teams within multilateral and bilateral development partners, academics, civil society organizations, and consortia. Awards Honor Canadian Women Volunteers
Women of Worth Canada
Women of Worth Canada is an initiative of L'Oréal Paris in partnership with Points of Light, the world’s largest volunteer service organization. The program celebrates inspirational Canadian women volunteers who have improved the lives of people and families in their community, province, or across the country. Ten Honourees will each be awarded a $10,000 grant for her nonprofit cause. One of these Honourees will be selected as the National Honouree and awarded an additional $10,000 grant for a total of $20,000 to support her organization. Honourees will also receive marketing support, tools, training, and networking opportunities to enable them to make a greater impact. The nomination deadline is November 28, 2016. Funding Promotes Music Therapy in Canada
Canadian Music Therapy Trust Fund
The Canadian Music Therapy Trust Fund promotes music therapy services and research in order to restore, maintain, and improve the mental, physical, and emotional health of Canadians. The Trust seeks to demonstrate the effectiveness and importance of music therapy by funding pilot projects, research, clinical studies, and special projects. Researchers, music therapists, and music therapists-in-training are eligible to apply. Applications may be submitted at any time. Grants Target Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities in Manitoba
Manitoba Marathon Foundation
The Manitoba Marathon Foundation supports programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities in Manitoba. The Foundation’s priority funding areas consist of independent living, employment, family support, retirement options, and early childhood. Registered charities are eligible to apply. Applications must be submitted by December 31, 2016. Visit the Foundation’s website to learn more about each of the funding areas.

Salmon Conservation Initiatives in Atlantic Canada and Quebec Funded
Atlantic Salmon Conservation Foundation
The Atlantic Salmon Conservation Foundation seeks to help achieve healthy and sustainable wild Atlantic salmon stocks in Atlantic Canada and Quebec. The Foundation supports activities related to the conservation of the wild Atlantic salmon and its habitat. Eligible projects include development of salmon and salmon habitat conservation plans for a watershed or sub-watershed, conservation and restoration of wild Atlantic salmon and salmon habitat, restoring access of wild Atlantic salmon to salmon habitat, and public education and awareness. Proposed projects must be located in watersheds within the provinces of Québec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, or Newfoundland and Labrador. Eligible applicants include Canadian non-governmental organizations, municipalities, educational institutions, and First Nations and Aboriginal organizations. Funding Enhances the Quality of Life for Children in Ethiopia
USAID
The USAID Caring for Vulnerable Children program aims to improve health and well-being outcomes for orphans and vulnerable children in Ethiopia by enabling them to utilize services for improving HIV/AIDS care, health, nutrition, economic security, education, protection, and psychosocial well-being. The application deadline is December 15, 2016.

Grants Protect Wildlife and Ecosystems in Central America
Fish and Wildlife Service
The Wildlife Without Borders LAC Central America 2017 program provides funding to reduce threats to key species and ecosystems in Central America and to strengthen the requisite local individual and institutional capacity to sustain conservation processes in the long-term. Applications must be submitted by December 16, 2016.

 

Canadian Government Funding Opportunities

Celebrate Canada Activities Funded
Canadian Heritage
The Celebrate Canada program provides financial support for activities organized on specific days during the Celebrate Canada period, from June 21 to July 1. Funding for celebrations will enable Canadians to appreciate Canada’s cultural, ethnic, linguistic, and geographic diversity and develop opportunities for Canadians to participate in celebrations that create a sense of pride and belonging to Canada. Eligible applicants include Canadian nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, corporations, municipal governments, and other municipal, provincial, and territorial institutions. The deadline to submit an application is November 21, 2016.

Projects Promoting Gender Equality Supported
Status of Women Canada
Through the Funding to Advance Gender Equality in Canada call for proposals, Status of Women Canada is providing funding for projects to support gender equality across Canada. Organizations will receive grants of up to $400,000 to identify women leaders in various sectors, organizations, and communities, and engage them in local projects to advance gender equality. These women leaders and their sponsor organizations will also take part in a pan-Canadian network of key women leaders, which will support collaborative action to advance gender equality in Canada. To be eligible, organizations must be working consistently on gender equality issues within the following areas of focus: increasing women’s economic security and prosperity, encouraging women’s leadership and democratic participation, and ending violence against women and girls. The application deadline is December 8, 2016.
