Prize Facilitates Development of Education Solutions

WISE Prize for Education

Application deadline: March 15, 2024
Grant amount: Finalists receive $100,000 to $150,000 to support solution development. One $1 million prize is awarded.
Description: The WISE Prize for Education, an initiative of the Qatar Foundation, seeks to raise global awareness of the crucial role of education in all societies and create a platform for innovative and practical solutions that might help alleviate some of the challenges which education faces around the world. The focus is on solutions that address one of the following key education challenges: 1) improving the teaching of the Arabic language, with a focus on developing a solution to improve the effectiveness of teaching, acquisition, and use of the Arabic language; 2) accelerating foundational literacies, with a focus on creating a personalized learning tool to accelerate basic literacy and numeracy skills, particularly in under-resourced areas; and 3) addressing challenges in AI, with a focus on designing a tech-based intervention to equip youth with skills to navigate challenges of increasing presence in an AI-driven market and society, such as biases and disinformation. Any type of legally registered organization working in any education sector is eligible to apply. Cash awards are made to the winner and finalists.

Grants Target Women and Girls Facing Barriers

Circle of Sisterhood Foundation

Application deadline: March 1, 2024
Geographic scope: Global, with an emphasis on developing countries
Grant amount: Grants range up to $10,000. 
Description: The mission of the Circle of Sisterhood Foundation is to remove barriers to education for girls and women facing poverty and oppression. The Foundation supports organizations that are implementing programs or services congruent with its mission. Funding is provided worldwide, with priority given to developing countries where girls are kept from school. Areas of interest include adult education, community programming, early childhood development, health and medical supplies, K-12 education, life skills and vocational training, menstrual hygiene management, mentoring, reintegration from sex trafficking, school supplies and infrastructure, and teaching and teacher education. U.S.-based nonprofit organizations operating domestically or internationally are eligible to apply.

D’Addario Foundation

Application deadline: None for letters of inquiry (Invited applications are due April 30 and October 15 of each year.)
Geographic scope: United States and global
Grant amount: Grants average $2,500. Product donations are also provided.
Description: The D’Addario Foundation is committed to inspiring and assisting the growth and appreciation of music throughout the world by partnering with community music programs. The Foundation provides grants and product donations to nonprofit organizations in the U.S. and around the world implementing immersive music-mentoring programs. Supported programs must offer free or affordable instrument instruction where students are participating multiple times per week, throughout the year, and for as many sequential years as possible in their education. Applicants must have U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit status or the international equivalent.

Unifor: Social Justice Fund

Application deadline: March 1, 2024
Geographic scope: Canada and global
Description: Unifor, Canada's largest private sector union, is dedicated to improving the lives of workers and their families in Canada and around the world. The Social Justice Fund promotes and supports the role of trade unions and workers groups in their efforts to strengthen democracy, promote equitable development, and contribute to poverty reduction, social justice, and education reform. Support is provided in Canada and worldwide.

Animal Welfare Initiatives Supported in Africa, Asia, and the Americas

Cold Noses Foundation

Application deadline: The remaining deadlines for this year are April 30, 2024, for Central and South America; July 31, 2024, for North America and territories; and October 31, 2024, for Africa and Asia.
Geographic scope: The Foundation is global in scope, but the upcoming 2024 application periods target Central and South America, North America and territories, and Africa and Asia.
Grant amount: The average grant ranges between $2,000 and $5,000.
Description: The Cold Noses Foundation is dedicated to preventing animal suffering and improving the bond between humans and animals. The Foundation provides funding for programs targeting domestic pets, wildlife, and farm animals relating to the humane treatment of animals, finding homes and non-lethal alternatives to euthanasia, providing veterinary care for needy families or organizations, and supporting humane education. Eligible applicants include organizations that are enhancing the lives of homeless and neglected animals that have an income of $200,000 or less in the last fiscal year. U.S organizations must be registered 501(c)(3) nonprofits. Non-U.S. organizations may be 501(c)(3) equivalent, which will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

Challenge Prepares Youth in Company Communities for Workforce Success

Lead2030 Challenge for SDG 4

Application deadline: March 1, 2024
Geographic scope: Communities where Deloitte has a presence
Grant amount: The winning solution will receive a $50,000 grant.
Description: The Lead2030 Challenge for SDG 4, supported by Deloitte, aims to address the following question: “How do we prepare 100 million futures for a world of opportunity?” The Challenge seeks to support scalable youth-led solutions that improve the quality of, or access to, education and skills training that prepares young people to succeed; utilize innovative approaches and technology; address root causes of the issue; collaborate with others to accelerate impact; and engage a wide range of stakeholders. Solutions should drive impact in at least one of the following areas: create skills development or lifelong learning opportunities for young people to prepare for the future workforce; accelerate entrepreneurial skills and develop a new generation of job creators; improve access to education and skills opportunities for those that may be left behind by the rapidly changing global economy; and support digital skills and adoption of technologies to empower learners’ access to education and skills development opportunities. Projects must be based where Deloitte has a presence. The winner will receive a grant, 12 months of mentorship from Deloitte, and sponsorship to participate in the One Young World Summit 2024.

Award Honors Innovations in Asia

Nikkei Asia Award

Application deadline: June 16, 2024
Geographic scope: Asia
Grant amount: An award of 5,000,000 Japanese Yen is made to the winner.
Description: The Nikkei Asia Award aims to recognize innovation originating in Asia. For the purposes of the Award, innovation is defined as any activity that promotes the transformation of Asia and the world, and supports the realization of a free and prosperous economic society from an Asian perspective based on diverse values. Individuals and groups who are commended for activities in fields such as business, research, technological development, and social/artistic activities are eligible to be nominated. (Self-nominations are not accepted.) Candidates must be from or living in Asia and contributing to Asia-based activities. A cash prize is awarded to the winner.

Efforts to Promote Arts and Culture in North Africa Funded

Arab Fund for Arts and Culture: North Africa Cultural Program

Application deadline: March 5, 2024
Geographic scope: Primarily Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, and Tunisia (Collaborations involving other countries in Africa and the Arab region are also supported.)
Grant amount: Grants amounts range up to $150,0000 and vary by grant type.
Description: The Arab Fund for Arts and Culture strives to build a flourishing cultural and artistic scene across the Arab region that contributes to establishing open and vibrant societies. The North Africa Cultural Program targets five countries in North Africa—namely Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, and Tunisia—and comprises two support schemes: The National Cultural Opportunities Fund scheme offers institutional and programmatic support to arts and culture institutions and spaces in these countries which have a track record of public programming and contribute to the diversification of cultural activities in city centers and peripheries equally. The Regional Competitive Creativity Fund supports collaborative projects established through partnerships involving at least one entity based in North Africa and one or more entities located across Africa and the Arab region. Funding is provided to both established and new collaborations.

Grants Aid Organizations Assisting Victims of Torture

United Nations Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture

Application deadline: March 1, 2024
Geographic scope: Global
Description: The United Nations Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture aims to help victims of torture and their families to rebuild their lives and to seek redress for the human rights violations they have suffered. The Fund awards grants to civil society organizations worldwide to deliver medical, psychological, legal, social, and other assistance to the victims of torture. Support is available to organizations providing direct services to torture survivors in situations of particular vulnerability including children, youth, persons deprived of liberty, persons with disabilities, Indigenous peoples, migrants including asylum seekers, refugees, internally displaced persons, LGBTI persons, people tortured in detention, victims of enforced disappearances, and victims of sexual violence in armed conflict, among others.

Funds Protect Civil Society Organizations Under Threat

Geographic scope: Global
Grant amount: One award of $5,000,000 will be made.
Description: The DRL Lifeline: Embattled CSOs Assistance Fund will award one grant to a project that supports efforts to enable and protect civil society and counter closing civic space. Projects should identify and provide emergency assistance to embattled civil society organizations (CSOs) across all regions and types of advocacy that have been threatened or attacked because of their work, provide rapid response resiliency grants and direct technical assistance to CSOs, and provide support and short-term assistance to local CSOs for advocacy initiatives. Only applications that propose implementing this project through a consortium of NGOs, with one organization designated as the primary recipient/lead applicant, will be considered.
