Canadian Bar Association: The Canadian Bar Law for the Future Fund

Application deadline: May 1, annually
Grant amount: The average grant is between $10,000 and $40,000. 
Description: The Canadian Bar Association aims to be an essential ally and advocate of the legal profession and guardian of the rule of law in Canada. The Canadian Bar Law for the Future Fund provides grants for innovative projects in the field of law in the areas of legal research, legal education, legislation and law reform, and administration of justice. Supported projects must be of national interest or of benefit to the general public. Registered charities are eligible to apply.

Small Grants Promote Mental Health for Older Men

HelpAge Canada: Age Better – Men’s Sheds Start-Up Grant

Application deadline: None
Grant amount: Up to $1,000
Description: HelpAge Canada’s Age Better program supports nationwide, regional, and local initiatives that are focused on improving the lives of aging Canadians currently facing barriers to inclusion. Applications are currently being accepted for the Men’s Sheds Start-Up Grant for men’s mental health initiatives providing a space for older men to engage in group activities like woodworking projects, bike repairing, and digital learning, so they can become more socially connected and contribute to their communities. Small grants support men’s sheds that have not yet started or have recently been launched in their community. Groups of two or more individuals wishing to form a shed, or existing community-based organizations who can demonstrate an interest in starting a shed from men in their community, are eligible. Applicants from across Canada are eligible to apply. Charitable status is not required.

Indigenous Youth-Led Projects Supported

Indigenous Youth Roots: Creation Community Grants Program – Youth Empowerment Stream

Application deadline: Applications will be accepted from April 1 to April 30, 2024. 
Grant amount: $2,500 to $5,000
Description: Indigenous Youth Roots envisions a future where Indigenous youth are empowered and connected as dynamic leaders in vibrant and thriving communities. Through the Youth Empowerment Stream of the Creation Community Grants Program, small grants are awarded for youth-led projects in urban, rural, and remote communities across Canada that provide programming, training, or capacity building for Indigenous youth. The focus is on funding new and emerging micro-projects that increase the resilience, engagement, and wellness of Indigenous youth. Funding in this stream is open to grassroots Indigenous youth groups consisting of a minimum of two youth. In addition to funding, grantees will receive mentorship, training, and capacity building opportunities.

Conservation Efforts Funded in Canada and the U.S.

Fund for Wild Nature

Application deadline: May 1 and October 1, annually (The online application becomes available six weeks prior to the deadlines.)
Geographic scope: Canada, the United States, and their federally recognized territories
Description: The Fund for Wild Nature invests in bold grassroots organizations and innovative conservation efforts in Canada, the United States, and their federally recognized territories that meet emerging needs for protecting biodiversity and wilderness. The Fund provides small grants for North American campaigns to save native species and wild ecosystems, with particular emphasis on actions designed to defend threatened wilderness and biological diversity. The Fund supports biocentric goals that are premised on effective and intelligible strategies, and gives special attention to ecological issues not currently receiving sufficient public attention and funding. Examples of supported activities include advocacy, litigation, public policy work, and similar endeavors.

Grants Enhance Food Security in British Columbia

Public Health Association of BC: Rapid Stimulus Grant for Food Systems Transformation

Application deadline: April 19, 2024
Geographic scope: Northern British Columbia
Grant amount: Approximately 40 grants of $5,000 to $25,000 will be made.
Description: The Rapid Stimulus Grant for Food Systems Transformation, offered by the Public Health Association of BC and Food Banks BC and made possible through the government of BC, distributes one-time grants for nonprofits in Northern BC to advance transformation in the food system. Support will be provided for a wide range of projects improving community food security in Northern British Columbia. Examples of supported projects include a shopping model at a food bank, fresh food supplements for hampers, volunteer recruitment and retention strategies, staff professional development and training, analysis of assets and programs, fundraising plans, communications strategies, research projects, shared infrastructure and tools with other organizations, community engagement plans, collaborations and relationship building, advocacy and policy work, and systems re-design projects. Registered charities, qualified donees, nonprofit organizations, and First Nations are eligible to apply.

Calgary Flames Foundation: Community Grant Program

Application deadline: April 26, August 9, and November 1, 2024
Geographic scope: Southern Alberta
Description: The Calgary Flames Foundation strives to improve the lives of southern Albertans. Through the Community Grant Program, the Foundation supports initiatives under the three main pillars of health and wellness, education, and grassroots sports, with an emphasis on youth. Priority is given to programs that are using sports, movement, activity, and play to benefit the lives of youth. Canadian registered charities are eligible to apply.

Giving Program Promotes Sustainability, Inclusion, and STEM Education

Dow Canada Corporate Giving Program

Application deadline: None
Geographic scope: Company communities, including Toronto and Corunna, Ontario, and Calgary, Red Deer, and Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta
Description: Dow Canada aims to enhance the quality of life in communities where the company operates in Canada, including locations in Toronto, Ontario, and Calgary, Red Deer, and Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. The company’s thematic areas of interest consist of: 1) advancing sustainable solutions, including waste collection, circular economy solutions, environmental research, climate change, and new ways of using Dow products for social sustainability; 2) building inclusive communities, including workplace diversity and inclusion, inclusive learning environments, and addressing systemic discrimination and inequity; and 3) developing tomorrow's innovators, focused on building a STEM pipeline to develop the next generation of diverse manufacturers, engineers, and chemists. Support is provided through grants, sponsorships, and employee volunteerism.

Grants Support Projects Led by Parents, Guardians, and Caregivers in Ontario

Ontario Trillium Foundation: Family Innovations Test Grant

Application deadline: April 17, 2024, for expressions of interest
Geographic scope: Ontario
Grant amount: Up to $100,000 per year for up to three years
Description: The mission of the Ontario Trillium Foundation is to build healthy and vibrant communities throughout Ontario. Through the Family Innovations Test Grant program, the Foundation supports parent-, guardian- or caregiver-led grassroots groups to test new ideas, explore different approaches, or research important issues. Funding is provided for projects designed to help other parents, guardians, and caregivers in the community in one of three areas: 1) trying out a new idea that has the potential to make a positive impact on the well-being of parents, guardians, and caregivers; 2) researching, learning, and understanding more about a specific topic or issue; and 3) bringing parents, guardians, and caregivers together to discuss an issue and explore new approaches collectively. Eligible applicants include grassroots groups that are not registered as a charity or incorporated as a nonprofit as well as organizations incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation without share capital in a Canadian jurisdiction.

Geographic scope: Canada
Description: The 2 Billion Trees (2BT) program provides financial support to organizations to plant trees over 10 years. Applications are currently being accepted through two funding streams: The Tree Planting Stream is for organizations, including for-profit organizations and nonprofit organizations, interested in tree planting projects. The Indigenous Funding Stream is for Indigenous governments, communities, and organizations interested in tree planting or capacity building projects.

Women and Gender Equality Canada

Geographic scope: Canada
Grant amount: Up to $400,000 for projects with a local reach, and up to $1,200,000 for projects with a regional, provincial or territorial, or pan Canada reach
Description: The 2SLGBTQI+ Projects Fund 2024 Call for Proposals aims to advance the equality of 2SLGBTQI+ people. Funding is provided to Canadian 2SLGBTQI+ nonprofit organizations to address barriers to 2SLGBTQI+ equality.
