MusiCounts: Slaight Family Foundation Innovation Fund

Application deadline: December 5, 2023
Grant amount: $5,000 to $20,000
Description: The MusiCounts Slaight Family Foundation Innovation Fund celebrates pushing the limits of the music classroom. Funds from this program may be used to support culturally-relevant or technology-forward approaches to music education through the purchase of instruments, equipment, and resources, as well as the compensation of specialist external clinicians to work with students at the school. Examples of supported initiatives include, but are not limited to, DJ programs, Métis fiddling, recording studios, and traditional Indigenous drumming. All public, separate, and First Nations schools in Canada are eligible to apply. Teachers, administrators, or school support staff may prepare a grant application on behalf of their school.

Grants Facilitate the Purchase of Kitchen Equipment

SilverChef Community Grants Program

Application deadline: The remaining application deadline for this year is December 31, 2023.
Grant amount: Grants of $5,000 are provided, including a $3,750 credit to purchase SilverChef certified used equipment and $1,250 in cash.
Description: The SilverChef Community Grants Program supports community groups in Canada who use hospitality or food services to train, empower, or support disadvantaged and underserved communities. The grants of $5,000 are to be used towards purchasing certified used equipment from SilverChef’s Certified Used Marketplace to assist in supporting the needs of local communities. Each grant includes a $3,750 credit to spend on SilverChef certified used equipment and $1,250 in cash. The cash component is intended to help towards the cost of freight and installation of the equipment, with any remaining balance to be used for any purpose the recipient requires. Eligible applicants include registered charities, nonprofits, social enterprises, and private entities with a business number for which improving the lives of Indigenous people accounts for more than 50% of their time or resources.

Health Equity Projects Targeting Prostate Cancer Supported

Movember Prostate Cancer Health Equity Initiative - Canada

Application deadline: November 16, 2023, for expressions of interest
Grant amount: $2,100,000 will be provided in grants ranging from $100,000 to $500,000. Additionally, seed funding up to $10,000 may be available to projects that have been invited to submit a full proposal. 
Description: Movember is a leading charity changing the face of men’s health on a global scale. Through the Movember Prostate Cancer Health Equity Initiative, funding is provided for projects that build or strengthen the evidence base of promising approaches that contribute to health equity, promoting the inclusion and improved outcomes of marginalized and traditionally underrepresented populations of men at risk of or diagnosed and living with prostate cancer. The aim of the Initiative is to reduce disparities in prostate cancer outcomes for marginalized and traditionally underrepresented communities through 1) generating new knowledge, or 2) strengthening evidence by accelerating adoption and implementation of that knowledge into practice. Priority populations include Indigenous men, Black men/men of African or Caribbean descent, men living in rural or remote areas, and minority populations based on sexual orientation or gender identity. (Requests for proposals for projects in Australia, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States are available on the Movember website for each country.)

Funds Strengthen Efforts to Combat Racism and Facilitate Dialogue

Canadian Race Relations Foundation

Application deadline: November 15, 2023, for events and initiatives taking place between mid-January and March 2024, and January 15, 2024, for events and initiatives taking place between April and July 2024
Grant amount: Up to $10,000
Description: The Canadian Race Relations Foundation (CRRF) is committed to fighting racism in Canadian society. CRRF's National Anti-Racism Fund strengthens the capacity of racialized communities, religious minority groups, and Indigenous people to carry out their own work to combat racism, and creates opportunities for meaningful dialogue, learning, and sharing with the broader public. Applications are currently being accepted for: 1) events, which are community-based, planned public, social, and learning occasions and activities; and 2) youth initiatives, which are projects that are youth-led or focused on youth (defined as persons below the age of 30). Supported formats for both events and youth initiatives include conferences, summits, workshops, galas, festivals, exhibits, and reconciliation or intercultural activities. Applications must align with one or more of the following themes and objectives: reducing systemic racial barriers, research and education, public awareness, and cultural and intercultural community building. Eligible applicants include registered charities; First Nations, Inuit, and Métis organizations; non-federal public institutions; and grassroots and recognized student groups.

Support Celebrates Culture and Strengthens Communities in Atlantic Canada

Atlantic Lottery Sponsorship Program

Application deadline: None for the Corporate Sponsorship Program, and March 15, July 15, and November 15, annually for the Community Festivals and Events Program
Geographic scope: New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island
Description: The Atlantic Lottery supports organizations in the Canadian Atlantic region, including New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. Support is provided through two programs. The Corporate Sponsorship Program provides financial support to community initiatives all across Atlantic Canada with the goal of strengthening the region. Examples of corporate sponsorship focus areas include healthcare, innovation, and business advocacy. The Community Festivals and Events Program supports festivals, exhibitions, and events that celebrate the culture that is unique within each community or region.

Small Grants Promote Active Living for NL Teens

Recreation Newfoundland and Labrador: Teen Challenge Physical Activity Funding Program

Application deadline: February 2, 2024
Geographic scope: Newfoundland and Labrador
Grant amount: Grants of $250 and $500 are made.
Description: Recreation Newfoundland and Labrador’s Teen Challenge Physical Activity Funding Program is designed to support community-based organizations with providing active living opportunities to teens, aged 13-19. Applicants can apply for $250 for a one-time teen physical activity event or $500 for an ongoing teen active living program (a four-week program or longer). Supported programs should break down barriers teens face in getting active. Nonprofit community groups and school groups are eligible to apply.

Grant amount: $10,000 to $50,000
Description: The BC Conservation & Biodiversity Awards Foundation, a donor advised fund at Canada Gives, seeks to recognize and financially support conservation initiatives in the province of British Columbia. The BC Conservation & Biodiversity Awards support impactful initiatives brought forward by registered charities for specific work contributing to the improvement of the natural environment of BC and the preservation of its wilderness and biodiversity. Focus areas include land and ocean-based initiatives, clean air and water, climate change, and science-based studies targeting the environment and preservation of wilderness and biodiversity.

Description: The SaskTel Community Investment Program supports activities that directly benefit a Saskatchewan community or the province as a whole. The company’s focus areas include rural communities, youth, environmental sustainability, information and communications technology, and diversity, including activities related to minorities, Indigenous people, women, and people with disabilities. Funding is provided for activities, programs, projects, and events. In-kind donations are also available. Nonprofit and charitable organizations based in Saskatchewan are eligible to apply.

Funding Fosters Cooperation Between Québec and the Nordic Countries

Government of Québec and the Nordic Council of Ministers

Application deadline: November 20, 2023
Geographic scope: Québec, Norway, Finland, Faroe Islands, Denmark, Åland Islands, Sweden, Iceland, and Greenland
Grant amount: $10,000 per project per year
Description: The Government of Québec and the Nordic Council of Ministers (NCM) have issued a call for proposals to carry out cooperation projects in the fields of culture, society, and research and innovation between Québec and the Nordic countries. The call aims to promote sustainable development and a green transition in each region, encourage exchanges between the two regions, promote co-creation and co-dissemination of artworks and cultural products, favor a better mutual understanding through the consolidation of networks and sharing of expertise, and promote cooperation between researchers in targeted fields of interest on both sides. Projects must involve at least two institutions or stakeholders from two different Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, or Åland Islands) and one Québec partner.

Youth Volunteerism and Civic Engagement Projects Supported

Canada Service Corps

Geographic scope: Canada
Grant amount: Up to $8,000,000 for Service Placements – National; up to $3,000,000 for Service Placements – Regional; up to $3,000,000 for Micro-Grants
Description: Canada Service Corps is a grants and contributions program that promotes civic engagement among young people aged 15 to 30 years old, while exploring ways to reach youth as young as 12 years of age, with a particular focus on youth from Indigenous and underserved communities. The 2023 call for proposals will fund organizations across the country to support the design and delivery of innovative volunteer programming that provides youth with meaningful ways to grow personal and professional networks and build essential skills and experiences. There are three available funding streams: Service Placements – National, for organizations with a national reach providing volunteer service placements in a full-time or flexible capacity; Service Placements – Regional, for organizations with a strong reach into local volunteer networks providing volunteer service placements in a flexible capacity; and Micro-Grants, for organizations whose projects will disburse one-time cash payments directly to youth to carry out youth-led projects that address a community need.
