Support Seeks to Improve the U.S. Education System
NewSchools Venture Fund
Application deadline: April 3, 2024
Grant amount: $150,000 to $250,000
Description: NewSchools Venture Fund is a venture philanthropy that builds a better education system by connecting people, resources, and ideas. Through its 2024 funding opportunity, NewSchools seeks to support early-stage organizations and new initiatives within existing organizations in the following areas: learning solutions, including content, tools, and models that accelerate reading and math growth for K-8 students, and teaching reimagined, including efforts that reimagine the role of teachers by evolving how they work and engage caregivers and community experts to support student success. Cross-cutting priorities include leveraging generative artificial intelligence to improve teaching and learning, embracing learning that happens outside of school and supporting students in achieving college and career success, and enhancing teaching and learning for students with learning differences.
Film Preservation Efforts Funded
National Film Preservation Foundation
Application deadline: March 22, 2024, for registrations, and April 26, 2024, for applications
Grant amount: $1,000 to $20,000 for Basic Preservation Grants and $20,001 to $75,000 for Matching Grants
Description: The National Film Preservation Foundation supports activities nationwide that preserve American films and improve film access for study, education, and exhibition. The Foundation’s Basic Preservation Grants support nonprofit and public institutions for laboratory work to preserve culturally and historically significant film materials. Matching Grants provide support to nonprofit or public institutions with film preservation experience and the current capacity to carry out large preservation efforts for complex, large-scale preservation, reconstruction, or restoration projects involving a single film or film collection of special cultural, historic, or artistic significance. Grants for both programs should target orphan films made in the United States or by American citizens abroad that are not protected by commercial interests. For Matching Grants, applicants must match the Foundation’s grant with outside cash support equal to one-fifth of the total project costs.
Grants up to $750,000 Address Health Inequities
Genentech Health Equity Innovation Fund
Application deadline: April 15, 2024
Grant amount: Up to $750,000
Description: The Genentech Health Equity Innovation Fund supports partnerships with the potential to shift policies, mindsets, evidence base, and practices to eliminate inequities in patient health outcomes. Through the 2024 Innovation Fund, Genentech seeks to fund teams focused on closing racial and ethnic inequities in healthcare to achieve a future where 1) all patients define and attain their highest levels of health supported by a system that is accountable for delivering access to high-quality, competent care, and 2) the medical and scientific workforce is diverse, inclusive, thriving, and accountable to the needs of all patients. The Fund seeks proposals that address inequities in the following therapeutic areas: neuroscience and brain health, including but not limited to multiple sclerosis; oncology, including but not limited to breast, lung, and hepatocellular carcinoma; ophthalmology, including but not limited to diabetic macular edema; and cardiovascular and metabolic disease, including but not limited to diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. Grants can be used to develop and test novel ideas or tools, implement demonstration projects, resource collaboration and partnership, and support research that goes beyond “studying the problem” or building capacity within a single institution.
Recycling Programs Supported Nationwide
Can'd Aid Crush it Crusade
Application deadline: None
Grant amount: Generally $5,000 to $10,000
Description: Can’d Aid is a national nonprofit that rallies volunteers from all walks of life to build thriving communities. Can'd Aid’s Crush it Crusade seeks to strengthen recycling efforts nationwide and eliminate single-use plastic. The Crush it Crusade provides recycling bins, training on how to launch and manage a recycling program, and the seed funding needed to help get recycling programs off the ground in communities throughout the United States. Grants are available for organizations at all stages of their recycling program's development, launch, and improvement. Funding can be used for products, staff/volunteer training, temporarily subsidizing hauling expenses, and various supplies needed to get a recycling program off the ground.

Grants Benefit Public Safety Organizations and First Responders
Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation
Application deadline: The next quarterly application cycle will open on April 4, 2024. The application portal will close for the quarter after a maximum of 600 grant applications are accepted.
Geographic scope: The focus is on areas served by Firehouse Subs restaurants. However, the Foundation recognizes the need of rural and volunteer departments throughout the country, and will consider applications more than 60 miles from a Firehouse Subs restaurant as well.
Grant amount: Grants average $15,000 to $35,000.
Description: The Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation seeks to impact the lifesaving capabilities and the lives of local heroes and their communities by providing lifesaving equipment and prevention education tools to first responders, nonprofits, and public safety organizations in the United States. Funding areas include lifesaving equipment, prevention education, disaster relief, support to military veterans, and scholarships and continuing education for individuals pursuing a career in public safety. Fire departments, law enforcement agencies, EMS organizations, municipal and state organizations, public safety organizations, nonprofit organizations, and schools are eligible to apply.
Funds Strengthen Native Arts in Midwest and Western States
First Nations Development Institute: Native Arts Initiative Grant
Application deadline: March 27, 2024
Geographic scope: Upper Midwest, Southwest, and Pacific Northwest states
Grant amount: Approximately 15 two-year grants of up to $100,000 each will be provided.
Description: First Nations Development Institute (First Nations) works to strengthen American Indian economies to support healthy Native communities. First Nations' Native Arts Initiative supports Native-led arts and cultural hubs working to preserve and advance traditional Native arts through programming focused on supporting artists and intergenerational sharing of artistic skills and knowledge. For the current cycle, Native-controlled nonprofits and tribal government programs located in the following regions are eligible to apply: Upper Midwest (North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin); Southwest (New Mexico, Arizona, and Southern California), and Pacific Northwest (Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington). Eligible applicants must have existing program initiatives in place that support Native artists, increase access to and awareness of traditional Native art and artists, and increase the intergenerational transfer of knowledge of traditional Native art forms and artistic practices. Funded activities may support arts programming or organizational infrastructure.
Programs Empowering Hawaiian Women and Girls Supported
Women’s Fund of Hawaii
Application deadline: Applications for the spring grant period will be accepted from March 1 to March 31, 2024.
Geographic scope: Hawaii
Grant amount: Up to $10,000
Description: The mission of Women’s Fund of Hawaii is to support innovative, grassroots programs that empower women and girls statewide in Hawaii. Grantmaking priorities include programs that promote women’s financial security and dignity and girls’ strengths and leadership; programs that build on the strengths and assets of women and girls and promote their well-being; and organizations that address factors that can stand in the way of women and girls’ success. The Fund has a particular interest in funding girls’ programs, programs serving Native Hawaiian women and girls, and programs in rural areas throughout the state. Funding is provided to startup and existing organizations or projects, and for general operating costs, special projects, and small capital projects.
Grants Advance Access to Justice in Montana
Montana Justice Foundation
Application deadline: April 15, 2024
Geographic scope: Montana
Description: The mission of Montana Justice Foundation (MJF) is to achieve equal access to justice for all Montanans. MJF provides funding to nonprofit organizations that are committed to one or more of MJF’s charitable objectives, which include supporting and encouraging the availability, accessibility, and quality of legal services, especially services to the vulnerable and underserved; increasing public understanding of the law and the legal system through education; promoting the effective administration of justice; and increasing public understanding of and access to alternative dispute resolution. Program Grants provide general operating support for well-established programs that have a strong history of success in meeting MJF’s charitable objectives and for new programs that can demonstrate a strong likelihood of success. Special Project Grants support discrete, innovative projects targeting specific areas of need. Priority will be given to proposals that demonstrate a strong likelihood of having a lasting, sustainable impact in underserved communities.

Program Supports Suicide Prevention Efforts

Description: The Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program enables the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to provide resources toward community-based suicide prevention efforts to meet the needs of veterans and their families through outreach, suicide prevention services, and connection to VA and community resources. The program assists in further implementing a public health approach that blends community-based prevention with evidence-based clinical strategies through community efforts.

Description: The Drug-Free Communities Support Program’s purpose is to establish and strengthen collaboration to support the efforts of community coalitions working to prevent youth substance use. The Program has two goals. The first is to establish and strengthen collaboration among communities, public and private nonprofit agencies, as well as federal, state, local, and tribal governments to support the efforts of community coalitions working to prevent and reduce substance abuse among youth (individuals 18 years of age and younger). The second goal is to reduce substance abuse among youth and, over time, reduce substance abuse among adults by addressing the factors in a community that increase the risk of substance abuse and promoting the factors that minimize this risk.
