Grants Enhance Contemporary Visual Arts

The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts

Application deadlines: March 1 and September 1, annually
Grant amount:
Curatorial research fellowships: up to $50,000
Exhibition support and multiyear program grants: $60,000 - $100,000
Description: The mission of the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts is the advancement of the visual arts. The Foundation’s grant program aims to encourage and facilitate the production of original work that expands and enhances the contemporary art field. Funding is provided to arts organizations and cultural institutions that support artists for projects covering the full spectrum of artistic activity and every phase of the creative process. Grants are provided in the following categories: curatorial research fellowships; exhibition support; and multiyear program grants for visual arts programming, including exhibitions, residencies, public art works, screenings, performances, lectures, publications, mentorships, and other professional development opportunities for artists. Restorative and Transformative Justice Movement Building Supported

Life Comes From It

Application deadline: None for introductions
Grant amount: Up to $25,000
Description: Life Comes From It is a grantmaking and movement-building circle that supports grassroots work led by people of color in the United States. Funding is provided for projects and collaborations led by people of color that focus on restorative justice, transformative justice, Indigenous peacemaking, and land-based projects. The aim is to support work committed to replacing criminalization and incarceration with alternative approaches to address violence and repair harm, and prioritizing peacemaking development and Indigenous initiatives led by Native people. Grants are typically unrestricted and for general operating costs. 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations or organizations with a 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor are eligible to apply.

Funding Fosters Religious Literacy in the United States

The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations: Interfaith Leadership and Religious Literacy

Application deadline: Letters of intent are due August 25, 2023.
Grant amount: Typically $100,000 to $300,000
Description: The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations’ Interfaith Leadership and Religious Literacy program area supports programming in the United States that improves the religious literacy of Americans, or that facilitates understanding, appreciation, and cooperation between individuals and groups across religious traditions. Grants support a wide range of activities including improving educational curricula, creating meaningful engagement between religious communities, and enhancing the public understanding of religious beliefs and practices. Proposals are especially encouraged in the following areas of focus: interfaith leadership and religious literacy on faith-based campuses, collaborations between campus student groups, and religious inter-group dialogue on campus.

Grants Aim to Empower Diverse Entrepreneurs and Investors

Nasdaq Foundation: Quarterly Grant Program

Application deadline: The remaining quarterly deadlines for 2023 are August 11 and November 10.
Grant amount: Averages $75,000
Description: The Nasdaq Foundation's Quarterly Grant Program strives to accelerate progress in diversifying entrepreneurship and empowering a more diverse group of investors. Support is provided in two areas of focus: 1) programs designed to empower diverse investors with the financial knowledge and confidence they need to share in the wealth that markets can create, including programs that enhance financial literacy among women and under-represented communities or improve access to knowledge and tools among these two groups; and 2) programs designed to support women and under-represented minority communities with the resources needed to grow and sustain their businesses, including programs that equip women and diverse founders with mentoring and resources or improve their access to capital.

Support Provided for Bird Habitat Conservation in Migratory Route States

National Fish and Wildlife Foundation: ConocoPhillips SPIRIT of Conservation Program

Application deadline: July 26, 2023
Geographic scope: AK, LA, MT, NM, ND, OK, SD, TX, UT, and WY
Grant amount: Up to $1.1 million will be available in 2023. Grant awards typically range from $50,000 to $275,000. 
Description: The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s ConocoPhillips SPIRIT of Conservation program provides support to advance bird species and habitat conservation. The purpose of this program is to help address the loss of bird populations by supporting projects that conserve, restore, or enhance grassland, wetland, sage-steppe, and coastal habitats for birds, or gather lacking bird population data with innovative methods. Projects must occur in a major migratory route ranging from the northern slope of Alaska to the north-south axis of the central United States, including the following states: Alaska, Louisiana, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming. The program will primarily support projects that address the following strategies: restoring or improving grassland, sagebrush, wetland, or coastal habitats for birds; conserving key habitats for birds; and conducting research or monitoring on priority bird populations.

Efforts Addressing Needs in Company Communities Funded

International Paper Foundation

Application deadline: Applications are accepted through mid-September, annually.
Geographic scope: Communities where International Paper has a significant presence
Description: The International Paper Foundation addresses critical needs in the communities where International Paper employees live and work in the United States. Areas of interest include education, with a focus on children’s literacy; hunger and food security for children, families, and seniors; health and wellness, including promotion of healthy living habits; and disaster relief. (Grants in the company’s global headquarters location of Memphis, TN, are made by invitation only.)

Grants Promote Public Art Projects in Massachusetts

New England Foundation for the Arts: Public Art for Spatial Justice

Application deadline: December 4, 2023
Geographic scope: Massachusetts
Grant amount: $15,000 to $30,000 for up to a two-year grant period
Description: The New England Foundation for the Arts’ Public Art for Spatial Justice program aims to support public art in Massachusetts that helps people see, feel, experience, and imagine spatial justice now, while on the collective journey towards realizing more just futures for public spaces and public culture. Massachusetts-based artists and organizations working with artists can apply for grants for projects in Massachusetts that creatively cultivate expressions or embodiments of spatial justice through public artmaking. Proposed public art projects must engage the public realm or be available to the general public to happen upon. Projects of all artistic disciplines are eligible.

Programs Strengthening Oregon Communities Supported

Reser Family Foundation

Application deadline: The upcoming deadline is August 1, 2023.
Geographic scope: Oregon
Grant amount: Up to $50,000
Description: The Reser Family Foundation seeks to improve and strengthen communities throughout Oregon. The Foundation’s Responsive Grant Programs support programs or projects that hold promise to accomplish a measurable impact in the areas of education, health, arts, and the environment. The Fast Track Grant Program is for requests of $12,499 and under, while the Mid Size Grant Program is for requests from $12,500 to $50,000. Oregon nonprofit organizations, public schools, municipalities, and tribal entities are eligible to apply.

Program Helps Victims of Violence

Department of Health and Human Services

Application deadline: August 11, 2023
Description: The intent of the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act's Culturally Specific Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault discretionary grant program is to build and sustain organizational capacity in delivering trauma-informed, developmentally sensitive, culturally relevant services for children, individuals, and families affected by sexual assault, domestic violence, and other traumas. This discretionary grant program will build upon the progress of culturally specific and community-based sexual assault and domestic violence programs in reducing the pervasive and harmful impact of violence and trauma by implementing culturally relevant, trauma-informed, and evidence-informed interventions for individuals and families who are from diverse, underserved, and historically marginalized communities.

Funds Available for Training on Environmental Hazards

Environmental Protection Agency

Application deadline: August 2, 2023
Description: Brownfields Job Training Grants support programs that recruit, train, and retain a local skilled workforce by prioritizing unemployed and underemployed residents to obtain the skills and credentials needed for pathways into full-time employment in various aspects of hazardous and solid waste management and within the larger environmental field, including sustainable cleanup and reuse and chemical safety. The program helps residents take advantage of jobs across a spectrum of brownfield-related activities, including the assessment, cleanup, remediation, and planning/site preparation for the revitalization of brownfields. This can involve the assessment and cleanup of solid and hazardous waste, chemical risk management, stormwater management relating to site cleanup, planning and site preparation for low-impact development activities, planning and site preparation for green infrastructure installation and maintenance, and vulnerability assessment and contamination mitigation planning.
