Proposal Writing 101
From start to finish, your proposals must tell a strong, consistent story. However, accomplishing this across the unique sections of an application is not always straightforward. Grantmakers make it even more challenging by using different terms that often mean the same thing. When you're new to proposal writing, it can feel like an overwhelming task, but it's important to remember that you don't have to be perfect to begin your proposal writing journey! It is a skill that you will develop and refine over time. During this webinar, Alice Ruhnke will walk you through a systematic process to apply to all your grantseeking efforts in order to reduce the stress related to proposal writing. She'll introduce a planning tool that can be used again and again by your organization, saving you time and energy in your grantseeking efforts. This webinar will help you understand the essential sections that comprise 95% of all grant applications, navigate confusing grant-related terminology so you understand what funders really want, discover the best practices on how to write each section, use a Program Planning Framework to connect all the pieces of an application together, and develop strategies to infuse your organization's strengths in your proposal to make it even more competitive. This webinar is perfect for beginners, but grant proposal writers with limited experience will also walk away with new insights and resources. The webinar will be held on Thursday, July 21, 2022.

Is a capital campaign in your future? You're not alone, as 74% of nonprofits recently indicated they were in a campaign or planning one. These three webinars, presented by Kevin Wallace and Carlyn Schulzke of CampaignCounsel.org, are designed to help your nonprofit organization understand and prepare for the process of raising big dollars for capital projects. The first webinar, Are You Ready for a Capital Campaign?, will help you ask and answer six questions vital to preparing for the pre-campaign process and the campaign itself. In the second webinar, Essential Capital Campaign Preparations, learn about the pre-campaign steps of needs assessments and feasibility studies, what to expect from these tools, and how they can help you understand the financial capacity of your organization and its donors. The third webinar, The Stages and Challenges to Expect During a Capital Campaign, will help you understand the five phases typical to most capital campaigns and the stages and challenges that come with each phase. These webinars can be taken together to methodically build your organization's readiness to take on a capital campaign or as stand-alone learning opportunities. Executive directors, development directors, and board leaders from a broad range of nonprofit organizations will benefit from these 90-minute presentations. The deadline to register for the Power of 3 is Wednesday, July 27, 2022. The webinars will be held on July 27, August 10, and August 24, 2022.

GrantStation Announcements
The latest updates from GrantStation

Greetings From Our New President, Alice Ruhnke
Because I cannot remember what I had for dinner last night, I find it strange that I distinctly remember my first interaction with GrantStation, and more specifically, the founder, Cynthia Adams. It was 2004 and I was working at Mission West Virginia, a statewide nonprofit organization. I had just acquired a large federal grant to build the capacity of faith-based and community-based organizations in the state. Cindy called to set up a time to demonstrate the features of GrantStation and inquire if the resources would be a benefit to the organizations we served. I was immediately drawn to the opportunities provided by GrantStation, in addition to the personalized and professional services she offered.

Since that day, I have partnered with GrantStation as often as possible. And on June 1, 2022, 15 years after launching and growing my own proposal writing consulting company, The Grant Advantage, I sold it to become the President of GrantStation.

This is a big move for both myself and GrantStation, but it is a perfect fit because of our aligned values. For example, we both:

  • focus our strengths on meeting the needs of the nonprofit sector by doing what we "do best" and keeping our eyes on that goal;
  • address the individual and unique needs of those we serve and provide a personal approach instead of a cookie cutter option;
  • believe in life-long learning and aren't afraid to say we don't have an answer to a question, but have a network that we can reach out to and get answers or ideas;
  • look for the next "best" thing to support nonprofits and figure out how to make things happen through partnerships;
  • have a strong commitment to customer service; and,
  • work to make the world a better place by helping the nonprofit community address their missions.

I am thrilled that Cindy will still be the Chair of the Board of Directors and a trusted advisor as we continue to grow GrantStation—a tremendous company she built from the ground up. I am so excited to work hand-in-hand with Ellen Mower, CEO; David Preis, Senior Vice President of Member Services and Technology; and the entire GrantStation staff as we continue to create a civil society by assisting the nonprofit sector in its quest to build healthy and effective communities. Please reach out to me to talk about ways we can partner, resources we can build, online education we can provide, or anything else about grantseeking and proposal writing.
