Investments Revitalize Cities and Promote Inclusive Growth
JPMorgan Chase: AdvancingCities Challenge

The AdvancingCities Challenge, an initiative of JPMorgan Chase, is a $500 million, five-year initiative to invest in solutions that bolster the long-term vitality of the world’s cities and the communities within them that have not benefited from economic growth. The Challenge will make investments of up to $3 million in cities to support creative, collaborative, and sustainable solutions that address cross-cutting challenges to help more people benefit from a growing economy. Funding is provided to existing local coalitions of elected, business, and nonprofit leaders working together to address major social and economic challenges such as employment barriers, financial insecurity, and neighborhood disinvestment. Support for Entrepreneurs Tackling Poverty in the Developing World
D-Prize

D-Prize funds new entrepreneurs who increase access to proven poverty interventions. The Prize supports ventures that scale distribution of an already proven poverty intervention in the developing world. Distribution Challenges focus on the thematic areas of girls' education, agriculture, energy, global health, education, and good governance and infrastructure. Within these thematic areas, specific challenges focus on topics such as quality seeds and clean cookstoves. Awardees receive up to $20,000 to launch a pilot in any region where extreme poverty exists. Aspiring entrepreneurs from anywhere in the world are eligible to apply. Grants Empower Girls in the San Francisco Bay Area and Internationally
Girls Rights Project

The Girls Rights Project is dedicated to ensuring that girls throughout the world have a right to life, health, freedom, and education and to ending trafficking, violence, and other forms of mistreatment and discrimination against girls. The Girls Rights Project funds grants both in the San Francisco Bay Area and internationally that improve the rights of girls and contribute to their development and empowerment. Areas of interest include education and empowerment, anti-trafficking, legal reform, human rights, health, and gender equality. Grants generally range from $1,000 to $10,000, and priority is given to organizations for whom small grants can make an impact. Applications are accepted throughout the year. Funding Promotes Mindfulness in Africa
World Peace Initiative: Mindfulness Grant for the Community

The World Peace Initiative works to create inner peace through the personal development of individuals worldwide. The Initiative’s Mindfulness Grant for the Community program provides funding of up to $3,000 for a project that makes a positive change in society and promotes mindfulness and meditation as a tool to improve people’s quality of life. Projects should be carried out in Africa by Africans and contribute to the social, economic, or civic development of the applicant’s home country, city, or region. The application deadline is October 20, 2018. The five best projects will be shortlisted by the review committee, and the winner will be chosen via a public vote. Support for Green Spaces in the U.S., Canada, and Selected European Countries
Hydro Flask: Parks for All

Parks for All, the charitable giving program of Hydro Flask, supports the development, maintenance, and accessibility of public green spaces so people everywhere can live healthier, happier, and more fulfilled lives. Parks for All supports organizations in the U.S., Canada, and selected European countries dedicated to building, restoring, maintaining, or providing public access to parks and recreational public lands or beaches and coastal areas. Grants are provided in the following categories: New Parks, Park Access/Education, or Park Maintenance/Stewardship. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofit or equivalent organizations in the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Sweden, Switzerland, Belgium, and Holland. Innovative Urban WASH Initiatives Funded
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation: Grand Challenges – Innovation for WASH in Urban Settings

Grand Challenges is a family of initiatives by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation that fosters innovation to solve key global health and development problems. The Innovation for WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) in Urban Settings challenge seeks digital technology-based solutions to make it easier to access safe, clean water and sanitation services for the urban poor and make a difference in reducing morbidity and mortality. Ideas must constitute transformative rather than incremental improvements in urban water and sanitation solutions and be low cost. Priority is given to solutions that address current inequities in access to WASH needs, prioritize marginalized populations, address a diverse geographic range of urban environments, and consider the UNICEF Office of Innovation’s design principles. Green Energy Achievements Honored
Ashden Awards

The Ashden Awards recognize achievements in increasing access to sustainable energy, promoting sustainable travel, and helping build a low-carbon future. In 2019, a total of up to ten awards will be provided. The UK Awards are made in the categories of Sustainable Buildings, Energy Innovation, and Clean Air in Towns and Cities. The International Awards, which are focused on developing countries, recognize achievements in the following categories: Sustainable Cities and Buildings, Sustainable Mobility, Powering Business, Clean Cooking, Sustainable Energy and Healthcare, Cooling for People, and Financial or Business Model Innovation. Cash prizes ranging up to £20,000 are given. The deadline to submit an online application is November 6, 2018. Visit the Ashden Awards website to download the guidelines for the 2019 Awards.

Funds for Grassroots Conservation Projects in the Global South
Whitley Fund for Nature

The Whitley Fund for Nature is a UK-based charity that offers training and grants to support the work of proven grassroots conservation leaders in the Global South. The Whitley Awards provide £40,000 in project funding over one year to dynamic mid-career conservationists who are leading wildlife conservation projects in the Global South. Winners tend to be nationals of the country in which they are working, and are looking to scale up work that is proven to be effective and would benefit from further funding and profile boost. To be eligible, projects must involve local communities at the grassroots level and deliver practical action that is founded on science. The application deadline is October 31, 2018. Canadian Funding Opportunities

Funding Targets Canadian Veterans and Children
True Patriot Love

The mission of True Patriot Love (TPL) is to inspire every Canadian to contribute to the resilience and well-being of military and veteran families. Funding is currently available through the following programs: The TPL Family and Children Fund supports programs that directly support and enhance the lives of children and youth in all regions of Canada. The TPL Family and Veteran Transition Fund provides grants to programs that support military families and veterans experiencing transition from a military career to a civilian career and lifestyle. Finally, the Captain Nichola Goddard Fund provides national funding to directly benefit community programs that support servicewomen, female veterans, and their families, to help address the unique challenges related to military life. Applications for all three programs are due by November 2, 2018. Visit the TPL website to review the guidelines for each program and download the application form.

Grants Promote Wildlife Conservation in Canada
World Wildlife Fund Canada

World Wildlife Fund Canada (WWF-Canada) is currently accepting applications through the following grant programs: Go Wild Community Grants, presented by TELUS, awards community groups and individuals with up to $7,000 to restore habitat, monitor species at risk, protect biodiversity, and generate solutions to the conservation challenges facing their communities. Through Go Wild School Grants, WWF-Canada funds projects that get school communities more involved in helping nature thrive. Grants are available to primary schools, secondary schools, and post-secondary schools and students. The application deadline for both programs is October 29, 2018. In addition, the Loblaw Water Fund, which opens for applications on October 15, provides up to $25,000 to registered charitable organizations and nonprofits working to conserve, protect, and restore freshwater habitats and species, or that are collecting long-term monitoring data on the health of Canada’s waters. Support for Art Education Projects in British Columbia
ArtStarts in Schools 

ArtStarts in Schools seeks to expand the role of arts in education for the benefit of British Columbia's young people. ArtStarts in Schools offers several grants to artists, schools, and school districts that support the arts in education and creative experiences for young people in British Columbia. Applications are currently being accepted for the following programs: The Arts in Education Council of BC Fund supports teachers' professional development in the arts. Applications for this program are due October 12, 2018. Artists in the Classroom grants bring professional artists into schools for rich, hands-on learning experiences. The deadline to apply is October 18, 2018. Cherniavsky's Mr. Music Fund helps schools bring students to live performances of classical/traditional music, opera, or ballet. Saskatchewan Youth Projects Funded
Access Communications Children's Fund

The Access Communications Children's Fund provides support to youth-based nonprofit organizations and charities in communities served by the company in Saskatchewan. Grants support initiatives targeting youth under the age of 18 in the areas of poverty, crime prevention, education and literacy, and health and well-being, including physical and mental health and children with disabilities. Company communities include locations in Regina, Estevan, Humboldt, La Ronge, Melfort, North Battleford, Saskatoon, Weyburn, and Yorkton. Applications are accepted throughout the year. Funding Tackles Internet Censorship
Department of State

The Internet Freedom: Advancing and Promoting Anti-Censorship Transport Libraries program seeks to promote an open, interoperable, reliable, and secure Internet. Funding supports the development of anti-censorship technologies, including the libraries of interchangeable transport-layer obfuscation protocols known as pluggable transports. The deadline to apply is November 9, 2018.

Creative Development Solutions Supported
USAID

Development Innovation Ventures is USAID’s open innovation program that tests and scales creative solutions to any global development challenge. Funding is provided to test new ideas, take strategic risks, build evidence of what works, and advance the best solutions. Proposals are accepted from any type of organization in any country where USAID operates, across three stages: proof of concept, testing and positioning for scale, and scaling. In addition, USAID provides evidence grants to support research and evaluations that generate evidence of an innovation’s impact per dollar and potential for expansion. Applications are accepted year-round.

 

 

Canadian Government Funding Opportunities

Support for Mental Health Initiatives Targeting Black Canadians
Public Health Agency of Canada

The Promoting Health Equity: Mental Health of Black Canadians Fund supports Black Canadians to develop more culturally focused knowledge, capacity, and programs to improve mental health in their communities. The Fund supports community-based organizations and projects that promote mental health and address its determinants for Black Canadians through the Incubator Stream and the Implementation Stream. The deadline to submit a Funding Request Form is November 7, 2018.

Grants Combat Racism in Alberta
Alberta Culture and Tourism

The Anti-Racism Community Grant program supports initiatives that raise awareness and understanding of racism and its impact on all Albertans. Funding is provided through two streams: Community Anti-Racism and Indigenous Anti-Racism. Supported projects include training and education, developing resources, support services, and capacity-building activities. The upcoming application deadline is November 1, 2018.

Basel Convention on Philanthropy
For those of you looking for a big picture view of the current philanthropic landscape, the Basel Convention on Philanthropy, which takes place from November 19-20, will definitely get your wheels turning. This conference features international speakers from the nonprofit sector, politics, research, and business coming together to address the diversity and future challenges of philanthropy. It will explore the role of philanthropy across issues such as digitalization, migration, impact measurement, globalization, health crises, democracy, and sustainability.
