Global Funding Opportunities

Grants Aim to Stem Nuclear Proliferation and Build Regional Peace
Ploughshares Fund

The Ploughshares Fund supports organizations and individuals working to build a safe, secure, nuclear weapons-free world. The Fund’s areas of interest include promoting the reduction and eventual elimination of nuclear weapons, preventing the emergence of new nuclear states, and building regional peace and security in South Asia and the Middle East. There are no geographical limits on the Fund’s grants. Organizations and individuals are eligible to apply; women and people from diverse communities are encouraged to apply. Applications must be submitted by September 3, 2021. Visit the Fund’s website to take the eligibility quiz and register for a Portal account.

Research on Juvenile Wild Animals Supported
Wild Animal Initiative

The mission of the Wild Animal Initiative is to understand and improve the lives of wild animals. Through calls for proposals, the Initiative helps academics secure funding for high-impact projects. The current call provides grants ranging from $25,000 to $250,000 for research on the welfare, ecology, and everyday experiences of juvenile wild animals. Eligible projects will shed light on one of the following questions: 1) What are the subjective experiences of wild animals like?; and 2) What strategies can we use to improve the welfare of wild animals responsibly? Relevant projects might include studies that extend captive animal welfare assessment techniques to juvenile wild animals, or those that demonstrate how ecological concepts can relate to wild animal health and well-being. This call is open to anyone. The deadline for expressions of interest is August 29, 2021. Women Human Rights Activists Honored
Amnesty International: Ginetta Sagan Award

Amnesty International, the world’s largest grassroots human rights organization, works to protect people wherever justice, freedom, truth, and dignity are denied. The Ginetta Sagan Award recognizes and assists women who are working to protect the liberty and lives of women and children in areas where human rights violations are widespread. Nominees should be the founder or executive director of an organization, be under threat for her activism, be proven effective at addressing human rights issues, and have brought about significant change in her country, region, or issue through her work. A $20,000 award is provided to the winner. The awardee can also receive up to $5,000 to further her professional development. Nominations close on September 1, 2021. The nomination guidelines and form are available on the Amnesty International website. 

Funds for Social Justice Initiatives in Canada and Worldwide
Unifor: Social Justice Fund

Unifor, Canada's largest private sector union, is dedicated to promoting social justice in Canada and around the world. The Social Justice Fund promotes and supports the role of trade unions and workers groups in their efforts to strengthen democracy, promote equitable development, and contribute to poverty reduction, social justice, and education reform. Support is provided in Canada and worldwide. International areas of focus include human rights, labor rights, women, peace and security, and humanitarian aid. In Canada, previously supported areas include, but are not limited to youth, homeless people, refugees, food banks, women’s shelters, leadership development, and education. Regional Funding Opportunities

Support for HIV Prevention and Care in Eastern Europe and Central Asia
Elton John AIDS Foundation: RADIAN Unmet Need Fund

The mission of the Elton John AIDS Foundation is to be a powerful force in the end to the AIDS epidemic. The RADIAN Unmet Need Fund supports sustainable, evidence-informed interventions that address the most significant and urgent unmet needs of key populations and people living with HIV in Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA). Supported interventions will 1) measurably improve HIV-related outcomes; 2) reduce stigma and discrimination experienced by people living with or most at risk of HIV; and 3) document and disseminate learnings and results to help other cities, regions, and countries across EECA to end their HIV epidemic. Programs may be implemented in Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Russian Federation, Serbia, Slovenia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, or Uzbekistan. Grants range up to $1,500,000 for projects lasting up to 36 months. Applicants must have presence in the country of implementation or partner with a local organization with in-country presence. Concept notes must be submitted in English or Russian; concept notes will be accepted until September 16, 2021. Projects Combating Antimicrobial Resistance in African Countries Supported
THET: Commonwealth Partnerships for Antimicrobial Stewardship Scheme

The Commonwealth Partnerships for Antimicrobial Stewardship Scheme, an initiative of the Tropical Health and Education Trust (THET) and the Commonwealth Pharmacists Association, funds health partnership projects aiming to leverage the expertise of U.K. health institutions and technical experts to strengthen the capacity of the national health workforce and institutions in Commonwealth countries to address antimicrobial resistance challenges. Grants ranging from £10,000 to £20,000 will support health partnerships operating in the following countries: Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. Projects should place a central focus on antimicrobial stewardship and on developing pharmacy expertise and capacity while incorporating and expanding the findings from other infection prevention and control initiatives and strengthening capacity of using clinical microbiology data. Applications must be submitted by September 2, 2021. Funding Promotes Climate and Clean Air Action in Developing Countries
Climate and Clean Air Coalition: Action Programme to Address the 1.5˚C Challenge

The Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) is committed to protecting the climate and improving air quality through actions to reduce short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs). The Action Programme to Address the 1.5˚C Challenge helps countries accelerate actions to reduce SLCPs using an approach that integrates climate and clean air action. Grants ranging up to $100,000 support projects addressing a wide range of SLCP activities in a variety of economic sectors. Initiatives should mobilize high-level political leadership with a national or regional focus, target integrated climate and clean air policy, drive transformative action in the main SLCP source sectors, and provide strong scientific and analytical support for action. Applications must be submitted by a partnership of at least two entities involved in project implementation and have the written endorsement of at least one national government eligible for official development assistance (ODA). Grants Bolster Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights Advocacy in Africa, South Asia, and MENA
AmplifyChange: Network Grants

AmplifyChange is dedicated to building stronger and more inclusive movements for sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) by effectively supporting those who are best placed to lead change and amplifying their voices. Network Grants support networks and coalitions in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and MENA working in one of more of the following priority themes: 1) eliminating gender-based violence; 2) addressing the causes of unsafe abortion; 3) challenging stigma and discrimination, attitudes, and laws that undermine human rights; 4) improving the sexual health of young people and girls; and 5) increasing access to comprehensive reproductive health services for poor, vulnerable, and marginalized people. Network grants will initially be between £300,000 to £825,000 for up to three years, with the possibility to extend up to five years for a maximum of £1,375,000. The application window is between August 3 and August 26, 2021. Visit the AmplifyChange website to review the guidelines and submit a concept note via the grants dashboard once it has opened.

 

Government Funding Opportunities

Transparency Efforts in Latin America and the Caribbean Supported
Inter-American Development Bank

The Transparency Fund supports institutional and regulatory reforms to improve transparency and integrity in IDB borrowing countries in Latin America and the Caribbean through alignment with international regulations and standards, targeted transparency, and the use of innovation and technology. Areas of support include control systems, financial integrity, open government, and governance of natural resources. Public or private sector agencies, including governments, civil society organizations, and private foundations based in a borrowing country, are eligible to apply. Initial inquiries may be made at any time.

Funding Available for Biodiversity Conservation in Guatemala
USAID

The Call for Locally Led Development Concepts on Biodiversity Conservation in Guatemala supports local actors for the co-creation of awards focused on biodiversity conservation in key protected areas of Guatemala. This five-year, $25 million activity or activities will build national capacity to improve management and governance throughout Guatemala’s System of Protected Areas (SIGAP) and implement interventions in three priority land and seascapes. The closing date for applications is August 30, 2021.
